Through the early stages of the first round of the NBA playoffs, only one Western Conference series saw the first two games split. Unsurprisingly, it’s the #4 vs #5 series between the Los Angeles Clippers and Dallas Mavericks, featuring two teams that were separated by a game in the regular season standings.

After the Clippers claimed the series opener despite being without Kawhi Leonard, the Mavericks brushed off Kawhi’s return and evened the series on Tuesday with Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, and P.J. Washington combining for 73 of Dallas’s 96 points.

Los Angeles Clippers vs Dallas Mavericks Prediction and Best Bets

In the regular season, the Mavericks were one of six teams—as were the Clippers—who won 25+ road games and one of four teams—as were the Clippers—to win 25+ home games and 25+ road games.

That served Dallas well for the first two games of the series, or at least for Game 2. But it might not serve them as well for the home portion of the series, just as it didn’t serve the Clippers well, either.

Both at home and on the road, the Mavericks sported identical 25-16 records. They were 21-20 ATS (51.2%, 12^th in the NBA) at home, and as a home favorite, they were 19-9 SU (67.9%, 17^th in the NBA) and 15-13 ATS (53.6%, 10^th in the NBA).

Now, there are certainly worse numbers out there. There are eight playoff teams with a poorer ATS mark at home and ten playoff teams with a poorer ATS mark as a home favorite.

But it does highlight a vulnerability and a potential banana peel for the Mavericks. Most recently, their best postseason showing, a Western Conference finals appearance two years ago, occurred when Dallas was one of the league’s best teams as a home favorite, going 27-7 SU and 20-12-2 ATS, both of which ranked fourth in the NBA that season.

When they exited the playoffs in the first round in 2020-21 and missed the playoffs last season, they were not as strong at home.

So, there’s a very good chance that the Clippers take at least one of the next two games in Dallas. That possibility is further strengthened by the fact that only two teams—the New Orleans Pelicans and Boston Celtics—have more road wins this season than L.A.

Will that win come tonight? Well, there’s good news and bad news for Clippers fans and bettors.

First, the good news. Only twice this season has L.A. lost three or more consecutive games. So, if they lose tonight, they may even the series on Sunday in Game 4 (3:30 pm ET, ABC), and only five teams have been better this season in games following a win.

Now, the bad news. While the Clippers are 19-12 SU (61.3%, 10^th in the NBA) in games following a loss, their ATS mark (13-18, 41.9%) is 28^th in the league. Also, they are just 4-9 SU (30.8%, 16^th in the NBA) and 5-8 ATS (38.5%, 25^th in the NBA) as a road underdog this season.

So, why are these two props worth a ponder here?

Since recording ten or more assists only four times in 17 games in October and November, Doncic, who had six assists in Game 1 and nine assists in Game 2, has gone three or more consecutive games without dishing double-digit dimes just once since.

Also, the over on his points prop and his points + assists prop are both appealing tonight. But the latter prop gets the edge as it offers a little wiggle room in case he goes for something like 32 points and 12 assists.

His 73-point performance against the Atlanta Hawks in January inflates the scoring average a bit, but Fridays have been fantastic for Luka this season. In addition to his 73-piece in Atlanta, he has scored 49, 44, 37, 34, 32, and 26 in his other Friday games this season.
