Celtics vs Knicks Prediction & Pick (Oct. 25)
The Celtics underwent some serious changes over the offseason in an attempt to establish themselves as a championship-caliber squad.
Grant Williams, Robert Williams, and Marcus Smart — fan favorites in Boston — departed for new locker rooms. But in their places came the likes of Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, two gifted players capable of giving Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown the help that they desperately needed and deserved.
The Celtics were already one of the better teams last season, boasting a plus-5.9 average scoring margin — No. 1 in the NBA. They were also one of the better teams against the spread, going 56-46 ATS (54.9%, No. 8).
Boston’s success had a lot to do with it having the fourth-best scoring defense. That’s why it isn’t crazy to think that the Celtics’ defense could be even better this season now that Holiday — a five-time NBA All-Defensive Team player — is in the fold.
Needless to say, it’s going to be an interesting test to see what the Knicks’ offense can do.
On one hand, New York’s attack seemed ordinary last season, ranking 15th-best at a 114.1 PPG clip. But any offense seemingly dried up during the Knicks’ second-round elimination as the team averaged just 100.5 PPG in the six-game loss to the Miami Heat, which included scoring 92 or fewer points twice.
While the Knicks might wind up turning things around in the offensive zone, I’ll need to see it to believe it. The roster is essentially the same compared to last year save for the free-agent addition of Donte DiVincenzo, who averaged 9.4 PPG in 72 games.
I’m going with my gut and it’s telling me that the Celtics are opening the season with a win. The additions of Porzingis and Holiday completely elevate the C’s to a level that the unchanged Knicks won’t be able to keep up with.
Considering the talent gap between these two teams, Boston has what it takes to win this by more than two possessions.
Celtics vs Knicks Prediction: Celtics 114, Knicks 106
Best Bet: Celtics -3.5 (-110 on Bovada)
Celtics vs Knicks Best Player Prop
Sticking with Bovada for the best Celtics vs. Knicks player prop, let’s go with Jayson Tatum hitting over 2.5 three-pointers.
While his 35.0% three-point percentage last season was below his career average (37.5%), Tatum still averaged a personal-best 3.2 threes per game. He’s also consistently hit deep shots against New York, averaging 3.7 threes in his last 11 games against the Knicks while hitting the Over eight times during that span.
After the Knicks allowed the seventh-most threes last season, Tatum won’t struggle to hit a trio tonight.
Bet: Jayson Tatum o2.5 Threes Made (-145 on Bovada)
