After two weeks on road courses, the NASCAR Xfinity Series returns to oval action today with the Hy-Vee PERKS 250, the series’ first race at Iowa Speedway since 2019 (3:30 pm ET, USA).
After winning the Pacific Automation 147 at Portland and the Zip Buy Now, Pay Later 250 at Sonoma, Shane van Gisbergen will be going for his third straight win today.
But while the three-time Supercars champion has made himself right at home on NASCAR’s road courses after dominating such tracks Down Under, he has finished in the top ten only twice in 11 oval races this season and is considered a long shot for today’s race.
But by virtue of his back-to-back wins, SVG has locked up a place in the Xfinity Series championship playoffs, joining fellow two-time winners Austin Hill and Chandler Smith.
Hill and Smith are part of a four-way race for the Xfinity Series regular season championship, along with current points leader Cole Custer and Justin Allgaier, who won this race in 2018.

Hy-Vee PERKS 250 Predictions & Picks
Iowa Speedway is back on the NASCAR Xfinity Series calendar after being absent for the schedule for each of the previous four seasons. This race originally took place from 2011 to 2019, then fell victim to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 before dropping off the schedule from 2021 to 2023.
When it was last held, Christopher Bell took the checkered flag ahead of Custer and Allgaier, who had been attempting to join Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (2011, 2012) and Sam Hornish Jr. (2014 & 2016) as a two-time winner of the race.
Previous Hy-Vee PERKS 250 Race Winners
- 2011: Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
- 2012: Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
- 2013: Trevor Bayne
- 2014: Sam Hornish Jr.
- 2015: Chris Buescher
- 2016: Sam Hornish Jr.
- 2017: William Byron
- 2018: Justin Allgaier
- 2019: Christopher Bell
Allgaier, who finished second at Portland and sixth at Sonoma, is my pick to win the Hy-Vee PERKS 250. When the race was previously held, Allgaier, who had a full-time NASCAR Cup Series ride in 2014 and 2015, finished in the top ten each year he took part.
- 2011: 8th
- 2012: 6th
- 2013: 8th
- 2016: 7th
- 2017: 9th
- 2018: 1st
- 2019: 3rd
That impressive previous history and his recent form make him a strong pick here. In his last eight races, Allgaier has a race win and ten stage wins, and he has finished in the top six five times. The series veteran is also -110 at Bovada for a top-three finish, which I’m happily locking in as well
In addition to his runner-up finish at Iowa Speedway in 2019, Custer finished fourth in 2018, and he is -120 at Bovada for a top-five finish. The defending series champion has six top-five finishes and 11 top-ten finishes this season, and I’m locking him in for another strong result today.
Lastly, while I love my Allgaier and Custer picks, what is my favorite value on the board? That would be with Sam Mayer to score a top-five finish (+150 at Bovada).
Mayer is not one of the race favorites, but since a rough start to the season, he has been on a pretty torrid run. Over his last eight races, Mayer has six top-four finishes, including a win in the Andy’s Frozen Custard 300 at Texas Motor Speedway. He may not win today, but the JR Motorsports driver will once again be near the front at the end.
