After a predictably wild race at Talladega, the NASCAR Xfinity Series playoffs are in Charlotte this weekend for the final race of the Round of 12. Who will move on to the Round of 8? Four drivers who find themselves in perilous positions going into today’s Drive for the Cure 250 could be in a much different position when the checkered flag waves.
After picking a fine time to claim his first victory of the season in last weekend’s United Rentals 250, Sammy Smith is locked into a spot in the next round. And while they aren’t 100 percent locked in, Xfinity Series regular season champion Cole Custer, Chandler Smith, Austin Hill, and Sheldon Creed are all in varying stages of near certainty, barring disaster at the Charlotte roval.
That leaves three spots likely up for grabs, and while Jesse Love and Riley Herbst are in positive positions at present, they must contend with four of the most dangerous drivers in today’s field trying to move ahead of them.
NASCAR Xfinity Series Standings (Through Two of Three Round of 12 Races)
- Sammy Smith – locked in with a win
- Chandler Smith – 2122
- Cole Custer – 2095
- Austin Hill – 2090
- Sheldon Creed – 2090
- Jesse Love – 2080
- Riley Herbst – 2078
- A.J. Allmendinger – 2065
- Justin Allgaier – 2058
- Shane van Gisbergen – 2055
- Sam Mayer – 2052
- Parker Kligerman – 2049
SVG is the favorite, which comes as no surprise given his success on road courses.
However, Allmendinger is a road ace as well and is a four-time winner of the Drive for the Cure 250, having won it four straight years from 2019 to 2022. Mayer, who was disqualified after last week’s race, won last year’s roval race.
Allgaier, meanwhile, isn’t known for his road course prowess, but the veteran of 465 Xfinity Series races will be laying it all out there after finishing 36th and 25th in the first two Round of 12 races.
Odds to Win the 2024 NASCAR Xfinity Series Drive for the Cure 250

- Connor Mosack +1800
- Cole Custer +2200

Drive for the Cure 250 Predictions & Picks
Justin Allgaier to finish in the top five (+125 at Bovada)
After seeing the regular season championship slip from his grasp, more frustration followed for Allgaier at Kansas and Talladega. But he can’t be counted out, and even if he doesn’t win the Drive for the Cure 250 or advance to the Round of 8, it won’t be without a serious fight on his part.
Parker Kligerman to win Group B (Kligerman, Alfredo, Almirola, Mosack – +210 at Bovada)
Kligerman, who is only five races from wrapping up his career as a full-time racer, has finished in the top ten in all five road races this season. While going six for six may not be enough to get him into the Round of 8, running near the front should keep him in the hunt until the end.
Could he somehow pick up his first Xfinity Series win in his 110th career start? That may be a tough ask, but it would be quite the story.
Sam Mayer to win the Drive for the Cure 250 (+1200 at Bovada)
SVG is the favorite, but there is zero value in backing him at all. Allmendinger is a solid shout, but the best option in terms of value and potential to win is Mayer. He won here in a must-win situation last year, and he has had a knack for finding himself in the right positions at the right time on the way to winning six times over the last two seasons.
