After an exciting Monday race in Charlotte, the NASCAR Cup Series has moved on to the St. Louis area, where the 2023 edition of the Enjoy Illinois 300 will take place on Sunday (3:30 pm ET, FS1).
Thanks to inclement weather, the Coca-Cola 600 was moved from Sunday to Monday, and Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney would lead 163 laps on the way to holding off polesitter William Byron for his first win in a points-paying race since August 2021.
On Sunday, Blaney will be looking to go back-to-back, while Byron will be aiming for his series-leading fourth win of the season.
One of Byron’s Hendrick Motorsports teammates won’t be taking part at the action at World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois. After intentionally wrecking Denny Hamlin last Monday, 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion Chase Elliott will miss the Enjoy Illinois 300 due to a one-race suspension.
You can’t bet on Elliott this week, but there are plenty of others worth your consideration and betting funds.
Here’s a rundown of the starting grid, with [insert polesitter] starting on the pole for the [insert frequency] this season.

Enjoy Illinois 300 Predictions and Picks
With Byron being unable to get past Blaney at the end at the Coca-Cola 600 after leading 91 laps, the lack of fortune continues for polesitters this Cup Series season.
Despite this, I still picked Byron to win in Charlotte because of the run he has been on, and I stand by it. Even though he came up short of the win, he stayed hot by logging his fourth consecutive top-four finish in a points-paying race.
Through 14 races, the only driver to claim pole and go on to win is Joey Logano, who took the win from the pole at the Ambetter Health 400 in Atlanta in March.
Speaking of Logano, he took the checkered flag in last year’s inaugural Enjoy Illinois 300.
Of the nine drivers who led laps in the race, Logano led just the sixth-most laps (22), with Kyle Busch leading the way with 66 laps led. But after the race was taken to overtime by a late caution, Logano got ahead of Busch on the 244th of 245 laps and won by 0.655 seconds.
Both Byron and Logano are good bets for this week’s race, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see either one in Victory Lane.
But this week I’m rolling with Kyle Larson to pick up his third win of the season.
Things have been largely hit-or-miss for Larson this season, who currently sits 11th in the points standings, 69 behind leader Ross Chastain.
Current NASCAR Cup Series Points Standings (After 14 Races)
- Ross Chastain – 446 points
- Ryan Blaney – 445
- William Byron – 442
- Kevin Harvick – 438
- Martin Truex Jr. – 433
- Christopher Bell – 429
- Tyler Reddick – 409
- Denny Hamlin – 400
- Brad Keselowski – 394
- Kyle Busch – 392
- Kyle Larson – 377
- Chris Buescher – 368
With his 30th-place finish at the Coca-Cola 600, he has now finished 30th or worse as many times (five) in points races as he has finished inside the top ten.
But when he is on, he is on, and there’s a reason why he is the favorite for the race even after a number of substandard recent finishes. With that in mind, he is my pick to take the win at World Wide Technology Raceway, with Byron my second favorite. And though this may seem like I am just focusing on favorites, look out for another strong showing by Blaney, who has finished seventh, second, third, 16th, ninth, and first in the last six points races.
