Last weekend, Bubba Wallace’s NASCAR Cup Series playoffs chances took a major hit at Daytona. Tonight, Wallace could erase that disappointment by winning the regular season finale, the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington (6:00 pm ET, USA Network).
Wallace finished a respectable sixth in last weekend’s Coke Zero Sugar 400, but with Harrison Burton pulling off an upset win on the last lap, Wallace is on the outside looking in with only one chance to change that.
There’s a chance that he could get in without a win, but with Chris Buescher 21 points ahead, a lot of stage points and some good fortune would be needed to erase that deficit.
Wallace will start with the best seat in the house, however, as he claimed pole ahead of Carson Hocevar and Chase Briscoe, who will also be aiming to win and get in. That’s nine spots ahead of Buescher, who will start tenth.
It could be a big night for 23XI Racing if things shake out the right way. Tyler Reddick enters the Cook Out Southern 500 with one hand on the Cup Series regular season title, as he is 17 points ahead of Kyle Larson and 18 ahead of Chase Elliott. Larson (fourth) will start two spots ahead of Reddick, while Elliott will start 20th.

Cook Out Southern 500 Predictions & Picks
- Bubba Wallace to finish in the top ten (-130 at Bovada): Wallace has five top-ten finishes in his last seven races, but with four drivers behind him locked in with wins, his efforts might not be enough. But he will at least score another solid finish tonight, even if he does ultimately fall short.
- Chris Buescher to finish in the top ten (+100 at Bovada): Stage points mean that a 21-point deficit isn’t insurmountable, so Buescher will need to have a good night if Wallace can remain near the front. Look for him to do that and pick up his third straight top-ten finish.
- Carson Hocevar to finish in the top ten (+145 at Bovada): Hocevar has finished 12th or better in each of his last four races after finishing 12th or better only twice in his first 21 races this season. He may not get the win he needs to get in, but he will keep that run going tonight.
- Kyle Larson to win: A win may not be enough to help Larson overhaul Reddick and capture the regular season title, but after a couple of disappointing results at Michigan (34th) and Daytona (21st), he will head into the playoffs with a series-leading fifth win.
