UFC 305: du Plessis vs Adesanya Fight Preview
Israel Adesanya opened the week as the -125 favorite to win the UFC 305 main event, per BetOnline. However, just a few days later, things have already changed as Adesanya and du Plessis share the same odds (-110) to be victorious in Perth this weekend. Having said that, it’s a fight that’s been a long time coming.
Du Plessis has been dominant everywhere he’s gone, picking up 21 wins in 23 career fights. The South African champion is also undefeated at the UFC level, having gone 7-0 since debuting in 2020. Five of those victories came by KO/TKO or submission, including wins over the likes of Robert Whittaker, Derek Brunson, and Darren Till.
The 30-year-old veteran’s biggest victory to date came at UFC 297. Du Plessis survived five rounds with Sean Strickland to capture the middleweight championship via unanimous decision, earning ‘fight of the night’ honors along the way.
Standing across from du Plessis will be a two-time UFC Middleweight titleholder. Adesanya was one of the best champions that the division has ever seen, racking up five defenses in his first reign alone.
Unfortunately, things haven’t gone well for the ex-champion lately. Adesanya first lost the middleweight gold when he was knocked out by Alex Pereira at UFC 281. Although he regained the championship five months later, he didn’t register a single defense before losing to Strickland (via UD) at UFC 293.
While du Plessis is the younger fighter, Adesanya has the physical edge with three- and four-inch advantages in terms of height and reach, respectively.
Du Plessis nearly doubles Adesanya’s striking output, however, it’s the latter who absorbs less damage per minute (3.11 vs. 4.77). On the flip side, the champion averages significantly more takedowns (3.00 vs. 0.05) and submissions (0.8 vs. 0.1) per 15 minutes than the challenger.
The last near-year has also been the longest that Adesanya has gone without stepping foot into the octagon, leaving time to tell how (and if) the layoff will affect him.

UFC 305: du Plessis vs Adesanya Prop Bet Odds & Betting Trends
Just like with all UFC main events, we’re going to take a look at BetOnline’s various du Plessis vs. Adesanya markets to see where the best value lies and how this fight could unfold.
For instance, BetOnline is favoring that this fight won’t go the distance at -135 odds. That isn’t too surprising given that these middleweights have only gone the distance 12 times in a combined 50 fights (24.0%). Interestingly enough, though, that doesn’t hasn’t stopped the oddsmakers from favoring Adesanya to win by points (+200).
The former champion is currently 8-2 when his fights go the distance, however, one of those losses came in his most recent outing.
If there is a finish, Adesanya is most likely to win via KO/TKO (+275) — something he’s done 16 times throughout his illustrious career. Conversely, du Plessis’ top victory method is to win by either points or knockout at +350 odds.
Nevertheless, both fighters know how to avoid being finished. Du Plessis hasn’t been knocked out or submitted since October 2018 while Adesanya only has one TKO defeat on his record.
Additionally, if he does win by KO/TKO, Adesanya is most likely to knock du Plessis out in Round 1 (+1200).
UFC 305: du Plessis vs Adesanya Predictions & Best Bet
In a fight that could go either way, I’m siding with Dricus du Plessis. The champion is on fire on top of being the better all-around fighter. Adesanya appeared to slowly be on the decline when we last saw him and it remains to be seen if his latest hiatus did him more good than harm (or vice versa).
Having said that, let’s bet that this fight won’t go the distance. These men are finishing machines and all signs point to a potential knockout on Saturday night. Whether we see a successful championship defense or a new champion, I expect to see one fighter lying on the mat when all is said and done.
