UFC Vegas 79: Mitchell vs Ige Fight Preview
Oddsmakers are clearly siding with one fighter in the UFC Vegas 79 co-main event. SportsBetting currently has Mitchell available as the -200 moneyline favorite, which carries an implied win probability of 66.7%.
Mitchell is a dangerous fighter, having begun his career 9-0 before debuting in the UFC back in 2019. He then proceeded to win his next five fights in a row, securing four of those victories by unanimous decision.
Unfortunately, Mitchell’s undefeated ways came to an end at UFC 282. “Thug Nasty” stepped into the ring with Ilia Topuria in Las Vegas, losing via second-round submission.
It’s been more than nine months since his last fight, though, leaving time to tell if he’ll have any cage rust.
Meanwhile, it’ll be interesting to see which version of Ige shows up this weekend.
On one hand, it wasn’t that long ago that the 32-year-old was stuck in the worst stretch of his career. Ige fought to a 1-4 record from July 2020 to June 2022, even losing three fights in a row.
On the other hand, he’s coming off back-to-back victories over Damon Jackson and Nate Landwehr, defeating them by KO and unanimous decision, respectively. If he’s successful on Saturday, it’ll be Ige’s first three-fight winning streak in over three years.
When it comes to statistics, Mitchell has the edge across the board. He’s the more accurate striker (59% vs. 45%) and absorbs fewer significant strikes per minute (1.71 vs. 3.69) than Ige.
Furthermore, Mitchell is a fantastic grappler who nearly triples his opponent’s takedown output (3.26 vs. 1.15).
Needless to say, Ige has an uphill battle ahead of him.
UFC Vegas 79: Mitchell vs Ige Betting Trends and Markets
If you’re trying to get a better idea of how the UFC Vegas 79 co-main event will unfold, SportsBetting has several Mitchell vs. Ige prop markets worth examining.
When it comes to the length of the fight, it looks like it’ll be a long one. SportsBetting is favoring that the fight will go the distance (-190) and the Over on the 2.5-round total (-225).
Keeping that in mind, it isn’t shocking that Mitchell’s likeliest method of victory is to win by points at -115 odds. Six of his last eight fights have gone the distance with him emerging victorious in each of them.
If there’s an upset, Ige is most likely to win by KO/TKO or disqualification (+400). Two of his last three victories came via knockout, however, it’s worth noting that Mitchell has never been knocked out in his career.
As for round + method combo betting, Mitchell is favored to win by first-round submission (+1000). A whopping eight of his nine career submission victories occurred in the first round, however, Ige has yet to be finished.
UFC Vegas 79: Mitchell vs Ige Prediction
Mitchell is the correct pick to win at UFC Vegas 79. He’s the more well-rounded competitor and his grappling skills truly give him an edge. Ige struggles against proficient wrestlers, highlighted by his being taken down nine times during his loss to Movsar Evloev.
Expect Mitchell to return to his winning ways as he ascends the featherweight rankings.
Prediction: Bryce Mitchell
UFC Vegas 79: Mitchell vs Ige Best Bet
As for the best bet, let’s take Mitchell to win by points (-115). On top of his going the distance more often than not as of late, it’s a good bet since Ige is great at avoiding getting finished.
I see this being a lengthy fight where Mitchell tires Ige out with his grappling before securing the win with support from the judges.
Best Bet: Bryce Mitchell via Points (-115 on SportsBetting)
