Kattar a fair favourite
Calvin Kattar will step into the octagon on Saturday with the backing of the bookies after every major online sportsbook picked him as the favourite to win this contest.
The pre-fight betting odds tell us to expect a competitive contest with plenty of action and talking points, but the traders are convinced they have the right man for the job.
Kattar is currently ranked number four in the UFC featherweight list, but the American fighter from Methuen, Massachusetts, knows victory here could change all that. If he gets the expected win against a dangerous opponent and can do it in style, he'll close the distance between himself and the leading fighters.
An entertaining fighter with an all-or-nothing style, Kattar has picked up the Fight of the Night bonus on four occasions, and there's no reason why he can't extend that to a high five in this bout. A respected MMA website also awarded him the Knockout of the Month prize following his brutal destruction of Jeremey Stephens.
Don't ignore The Fighting Falmer
Josh Emmett is here on merit, and he's intent on upsetting the odds, grabbing an explosive win that would catapult him towards the big time and the money fights he has been dreaming about.
Emmett brings a 17-2 record with nine of his victories on points, six by KO/TKO and the other two by submission. He has two losses on his card, one on the scorecards and the other on a stoppage, so he has nothing to fear in the cage and will arrive convinced this is his night to shine.
Emmett is ranked as the number seven featherweight in the UFC, and that's not to be sniffed at, considering he competes in one of the most competitive divisions in the promotion.
Any of the fighters named in the top 10 at featherweight can beat any other on their day, and we have already seen more than the odd upset this year.
The sole KO defeat on his card was inflicted five fights ago by Jeremy Stephens in Orlando, Florida, in 2019. Since then, he has fought four and won four with an even split of two by knockout and two on the scorecards.
Josh has claimed each of his last two wins on points, and it wouldn't shock us to see him complete the treble. He impressed when winning Fight of the Night on the undercard of Blaydes v Volkov when getting a deserved decision over Shane Burgos, and that showed he was ready for a step-up in the class of opponent.
His most recent bout saw him defeat Dan Ige on points over three rounds, with both victories scored in Las Vegas, the latter proving to be his big break at UFC 269.
Back the Boston Finisher to bounce back
Kattar scored an impressive double over Jeremy Stephens on UFC 249 in Florida and Dan Ige in Abu Dhabi, but that was followed by a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of the experienced Max Holloway in a top-of-the-bill tussle back in Dubai last January.
The latter was voted fight of the night and went the five rounds, but Max got a deserved decision from the scorers.
The beaten fighter that night had no trouble bouncing back, getting his career on track with an impressive win over Giga Chikadze on points in Las Vegas earlier this year. That was another Fight of the Night, and Kattar has been involved in three of those in his last five outings.
Looking at the stats, we note that four of the favourite's last five have all tested the scoring judges, and it would be no shock to see this return also go the distance.
If you believe the traders have called this one right and intend to back Kattar, the points win seems to be the way forward. That rates as the night's best bet.
