After a lengthy eight-game road trip, the Padres must face the white-hot Yankees in their return to Petco Park. New York has been one of baseball’s hottest teams for the last few weeks, owning the MLB’s second-best winning percentage (78.9%) since May 3.

Playing on the road also doesn’t intimidate the Yankees, who are 5-1 SU across their last six away games. In fact, they’ve won four consecutive road games ahead of tonight’s tilt by a combined score of 24-7. Meanwhile, the Padres have dropped four of their last five road games, being outscored by an average of 3.3 runs per game.

The Padres haven’t had the best luck against the Yankees, either, dropping five of the last seven matchups between these clubs. Having said that, they haven’t met at Petco Park since San Diego won a three-game series back in July 2016.

New York is also 6-3 SU in inter-league matchups this season whereas San Diego is only 1-2 SU in that regard.

Beating the Yankees has eluded the Padres more often than not in recent years. 

We could be in for a potential pitching duel today when Carlos Rodon and Yu Darvish go head-to-head on the mound.

After an abysmal 2023 campaign, Rodon has turned things around for the Yankees this year. The two-time MLB All-Star is 5-2 with a 3.27 ERA and 1.200 WHIP through 10 starts, racking up 55 strikeouts in as many innings. He’s also won each of his last three starts while only allowing five total runs across 18 1/3 innings.

Meanwhile, Darvish has been pitching like one of the NL’s best hurlers, playing to a 4-1 record and 2.08 ERA while averaging career lows in hits (5.7) and home runs (0.4) per nine innings.

That’s without mentioning how the two-time Cy Young finalist hasn’t allowed a single run in his last four appearances, striking out 24 batters across two dozen innings.

Carlos Rodon and Yu Darvish have been fantastic for the Yankees and Padres, respectively, this season. 

In a game that I could see going either way, I’m taking the Yankees to win on the road. They’re playing well away from home lately and have easily handled the Padres in recent years. San Diego also hasn’t been playing well at home, opening the door for the visitors to steal a win.

I’m also taking the Under on the 7.5-run total. Although the Over has been hitting for both sides lately, Rodon and Darvis are two of the best pitchers in the Majors at the moment. Considering how four of the last six Yankees-Padres matchups finished with seven or fewer runs, I don’t expect a ton of offense this evening.
