A few days ago, we were on course to see a repeat matchup in the World Series for the first time since 1978.
The Houston Astros were up 3-2 in the ALCS, and the Philadelphia Phillies were up 3-2 in the NLCS, with both teams headed home with a chance to clinch a return to the Fall Classic.
Alas, the Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks had other ideas. The Rangers took Games 6 and 7 at Minute Maid Park, and the D-backs captured Games 6 and 7 at Citizens Bank Park, ending the Phillies’ impressive run of home dominance over the last two postseasons.

Now, we have a first-time World Series matchup between two teams who haven’t been at this point in some time.
The Rangers, who are still seeking their first-ever title, are back in the Fall Classic for the first time since 2011, when they were one strike away from defeating the St. Louis Cardinals but agonizingly lost in seven games.
The Diamondbacks, meanwhile, are back in the World Series for the first time since 2001, their lone previous appearance, when they walked it off in Game 7 to upset the three-time defending champion New York Yankees.
Who will be celebrating a championship sometime next week at either Globe Life Field in Arlington or Chase Field in Phoenix?
The action will start on Friday with Game 1 in Arlington.
