Tomorrow night, the Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers will kick off their battle to be crowned this year’s MLB champion, with Game 1 of the 2023 World Series taking place at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas (8:03 pm ET, FOX).
To reach this point, both teams have required some big moments and performances at the plate and on the mound.
Rangers slugger Adolis Garcia earned ALCS MVP honors after hitting .357 (10 for 28) with five homers, 15 RBI, and seven runs scored in the come-from-behind seven-game series win over the rival Houston Astros.
Arizona’s Ketel Marte didn’t rack up the long balls and RBI like Garcia did in the Diamondbacks also overturned a 3-2 series deficit against the Philadelphia Phillies, but he earned NLCS MVP honors after hitting .387 (12 for 32) with four doubles and three RBI in the seven games against the Phillies.

Garcia and Marte are two of the top contenders to take home World Series MVP honors, along with Corey Seager and Corbin Carroll, both of whom put in MVP candidate-caliber performances in the regular season to help their teams break playoff droughts.
Among the players on both teams, Seager is the only player with a World Series MVP to his name. In 2020, he won the award when he helped lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a title triumph over the Tampa Bay Rays, which took place at the stadium he now calls home.
Will he join MLB legends Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson, and Reggie Jackson as the only players to be named World Series MVP twice? Ahead of Game 1, he sits atop the odds ahead of Garcia, Marte, Carroll, and Marcus Semien.

2023 World Series MVP Favorites
Corey Seager, Texas Rangers (+500)
Three years ago, Seager was named World Series MVP after hitting .400 with two homers and five RBI as the Dodgers dispatched the Rays in six games.
He wasn’t able to reprise his heroics the next year, hitting only .188 in the playoffs as the Dodgers fell to the Braves in the NLCS.
Seager then left L.A. for the Lone Star State, and after hitting only .245 in his first season in Arlington, played at an MVP level this season even though he missed 43 games.
In the first three rounds of the playoffs, Seager has hit .333 (15 for 45) with five doubles, three homers, six RBI, 12 runs scored, and 11 walks. The bulk of those at-bats came in the ALCS, during which he hit only .258 (8 for 31).
Adolis Garcia, Texas Rangers +550
After hitting .357 in the Rangers’ ALDS win over the Baltimore Orioles, Garcia went off against the Astros in the ALCS to end Houston’s World Series repeat hopes.
Most of his damage was done in the final four games of the series. He homered in each of those games and led the way as Texas routed Houston 11-4 in Game 7, going 4 for 5 with two homers, five RBI, and three runs scored.
In the regular season, Garcia hit only .245, but he hammered 39 homers and drove in 107 runs, tying for sixth in the majors in RBI and tying for seventh in the majors in homers.
He may strike out–he was tied for eighth in the majors in strikeouts in the regular season–but like other names at the top of that leaderboard, like Kyle Schwarber, Julio Rodriguez, and Austin Riley, when he connects, it can be a game-changer.
Ketel Marte, Arizona Diamondbacks +1000
In 2017, his first year with Arizona, Marte went 7 for 17 in four playoff games as the Diamondbacks won the wild-card game but were swept by the Dodgers in the NLDS.
Many players of Marte’s caliber would have pushed for a move to a contender over the course of the Diamondbacks’ playoff drought and run of losing seasons. But he stayed, and now he is four wins away from a championship and a potential World Series MVP.
Just as he did in his previous taste of postseason experience, Marte has been highly productive in this year’s playoffs. In the first three rounds, he is hitting .358 (19 for 53) with five doubles, two homers, seven RBI, and six runs scored.
Corbin Carroll, Arizona Diamondbacks +1000
Finishing in the top five of the NL MVP voting, as he has a good chance to do after a stellar regular season (.285 with 30 doubles, 10 triples, 25 homers, 76 RBI, 116 runs, and 54 steals), is an impressive thing to do as a rookie.
But he has kept it going into the playoffs, hitting .295 (13 for 44) with two homers, six RBI, nine runs scored, and four steals in five attempts. He was only 6 for 27 (.222) in the NLCS, but he saved his best for last, going 3 for 4 with two RBI, two runs scored, and two steals in Arizona’s Game 7 win in Philadelphia.
2023 World Series MVP Predictions
Could a Second Straight Rookie Be Named World Series MVP?
Last year, Jeremy Pena of the Astros took the playoffs by storm and swept the ALCS MVP and World Series MVP awards.
This year, Carroll could join Pena and pitchers Larry Sherry (1959 with the Dodgers) and Livan Hernandez (1997 with the Marlins) as the only rookies to be named World Series MVP.
However, he could have some competition there. Rangers outfielder Evan Carter made his MLB debut on September 8 and wasn’t overawed by the jump as he hit .306 with five homers and 12 RBI in 22 games.
He hasn’t been overawed by the playoffs either, hitting .308 (12 for 39) with six doubles, a homer, five RBI, eight runs scored, and three steals. He has been on base at least once in every playoff game and collected a hit in all but one.
Recent World Series MVP History Unfavorable for Pitchers
Will a pitcher be named World Series MVP for the first time since Stephen Strasburg in 2019? Don’t bank on it.
29 pitchers have taken home honors, but since Marlins pitcher Josh Beckett won the award in 2003, only three pitchers have been named World Series MVP: Cole Hamels (Phillies) in 2008, Madison Bumgarner (Giants) in 2014, and Strasburg.
