Will the end come tonight in Game 6? Or will we have a Game 7 in the World Series for the first time since 2016, when the Cubs broke their curse in Cleveland? The Braves will try to take the title tonight with Max Fried on the mound, while Luis Garcia will try to extend the series for the Astros.

In the regular season, Fried posted a 3.04 ERA, which put him 10th in the majors in that category. Garcia’s 3.30 ERA would have been 17th in the majors and fourth in the American League had he qualified, but the rookie hurler fell short by 6.2 innings.

While we have a great pitching matchup between two rising arms, we will see runs on the board early on if that trend continues.

First-Inning Scoring in the 2021 World Series

Game 1

In Game 1, the Braves jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on the way to a 6-2 win.

Game 2

In Game 2, the Astros got on the board first, tallying a run in the bottom of the first against Fried and going on to level the series with a 7-2 win.

Game 3

To this point, Atlanta’s 2-0 win in Game 3 is the only game in this World Series that has had a scoreless first inning.

Game 4

In Game 4, the Astros took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Braves battled back to win 3-2 and move within a win of the World Series title.

Game 5

In Sunday’s Game 5, Adam Duvall’s first-inning grand slam gave the Braves an early 4-0 lead and heightened hopes of a celebration at home. But the Astros rallied and extended the World Series with a 9-5 win.

Trends Throughout Postseason Favor More Early Runs

Not only have first-inning runs been a frequent occurrence so far in the World Series, they have occurred frequently overall for both teams in this postseason.

All four of the Braves’ four NLDS games against the Milwaukee Brewers went scoreless in the first inning, but that changed in the NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers. In the NLCS, there were first-inning runs in five of the six games. The only game without first-inning runs was Atlanta’s 9-2 win in Game 4.

For the Astros, two of their four ALDS games against the Chicago White Sox featured first-inning runs (Game 2 and Game 3), while four of their six ALCS games against the Boston Red Sox featured first-inning runs (Game 1, Game 2, Game 4, and Game 6).

There is an interesting note to add about early runs when it comes to the Astros’ postseason games that could prove handy if tonight’s game has a scoreless first inning. In four of the five Astros games this postseason that went scoreless in the first inning, second-inning runs were scored in all but one. That one was Game 3 of the World Series, which was scoreless until the Braves tallied a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by Austin Riley.
