See Picks & Statistics For The GameLet’s take a trip down to Angels Stadium of Anaheim, shall we? It’s a Shohei Bump Day. So, cheers.
We have Game 1 of this AL West series kicking off tonight with the Angels losing 4 of their last 6 games on the road and the Mariners on a 12-8 since the All-Star Break.
The Angels hold a slight lead in the season series thus far at 4-2. With all the moves that these Angels made ahead of the deadline, this home series may have Angels GM Perry Minasian on the hot seat or the king’s throne.
Mariners vs Angels Matchup
Are you messin’ with the (Bryan) Woo or rocking with Mr. Shohei?
If you’re looking to fill your cup with a vast abundance of K’s, then this is exactly how you’ll get your fix. Make sure the ice machine’s working, because even though the under K totals for both these Aces are juiced via Bovada, Woo u6.5 (-176), Ohtani u8.5 (-150), I’m a gamblin’ man! Give me the plus-chicken plays. I’ll tell you why later.
Looking at the game as a whole, the Angels ML has continued to climb throughout the day, up to -185 now, with the total hovering between 8.5 and 8. So far this season, there’s only been less than 8 runs, once. Fun fact: it was a Shohei Bump Day.

Player Props Special: Shohei 9+ K’s + Woo 6+ K’s (+269) via Bovada
I said it at the beginning of the article, I’m expecting a whole lotta the 11th Letter in the Alphabet tonight. Go ahead… count it out…
You get it, yet? WE’RE GETTING K’S TONIGHT, MY FRIENDS. Shohei’s career numbers against the Mariners are off the charts. First, he’s undefeated (5-0). Next he has a 2.00 ERA with an 11.38 K/9 rate. Now, we can’t be blind to the fact that he’s looked human in his last two home starts. To be fair and honest, which is all we can be, Shohei’s kinda been serving up turkey’s at home. 11.1 IP, 9 ER, 16K’s. NOT – GREAT for the already crowned Best To Ever Do It. However, this Mariners squad has been aggressive with their plate approach this season. According to FanGraphs, the Mariners rank 2nd in the MLB in 2023 with a 26.2% K-rate. If Shohei is able to look more like his June numbers than his July numbers at home, then we’re in for a show. (I’m not gunna say “HEY!” after that, as much as I wanted to. I’m just not gunna do it…)
Now we look at Woo Tang. I’m messin’ with him tonight. Know why? He didn’t log a SINGLE strikeout in his last outing. Not one. However, he’s trading out the 3rd-lowest K-rate, in the Arizona Diamondbacks , for the 8th-highest in the Los Angeles Angels. In his second MLB start, Bryan Woo went into Anaheim and in only 4.2 IP was able to rach up 7K’s. Now, the young man has been figured out a little bit by the big leagues since then, but against teams in the Top 10 as far as K-rate is concerned, his numbers remain close to 1k/IP. I expect him to have a relatively quality start, so the value for his over K’s is there.
Best Bet: Angels ML + Under 8 (+219) on Bovada
Look, I’m fully aware that I’ve given you two two-guysers here. We’re all about betting responsibly and that really does mean keeping your bets straight. However, sometimes we just gotta L.I.V.E. baby! The ML for the Angels is too juiced and I don’t see this game going over 8.
This’ll be a grind and a battle with botch pitchers tacking on quality starts. Let’s call it: 4-3 Angels victory. We get a little sweat. We get a battle. We all go home happy.
