Cincinnati’s Pitching Struggles
The Reds are in a pretty bad spot as a team. They have used the most players in one season in franchise history. This is due to the amount of injuries and transactions that have happened in 2022.
The current situation with the pitching staff is not something that their manager, David Bell, looks forward to dealing with on a daily basis. They traded away Tyler Mahle and Luis Castillo before the trade deadline, and they focused their efforts on the minor league pitching staff.
Hunter Greene, Graham Ashcraft, and Nick Lodolo quickly became the new starters in the rotation. However, even though all three were finding differing levels of success, the team is still in trouble.
Hunter Greene hasn’t pitched since August 1 due to injury, and the team just placed Ashcraft on the IL with a biceps issue. That has resulted in more lower level guys being moved up to the Majors.
Justin Dunn, the starter for Thursday, is part of that movement. He was acquired from the Mariners in March, but instantly went down with an injury. He missed the entirety of the first half, and just came back this month.
The Reds are also without Tyler Stephenson and Joey Votto for the remainder of the season. Not to mention Johnathan India reaggravating his leg last night, Mike Moustakas being removed on Tuesday with a calf injury, and Albert Almora Jr. on the 10-day-IL with a shoulder ailment.
The entire team has fallen apart this season, and there is not much else David Bell can do. Expect them to struggle against playoff teams, as the caliber of pitching right now is towards the bottom of the league.
Cincinnati Reds vs. Philadelphia Phillies Prediction and Picks
Reds vs. Phillies Prediction: Phillies to win
Reds vs. Phillies Picks: Phillies -1.5 (-159 at BetUS)
As far as betting this game goes, avoid the moneyline! There is no value in a favorite like the Phillies, and unless a miracle happens on a day-to-day basis, the Reds will be bad for a while.
Instead, take the Run Line. The Phillies have beaten the Reds by 2 or more runs 3 times this season alone. With Justin Dunn pitching against a hot Phillies lineup, it spells disaster for Cincinnati.
