See Picks & Statistics For The GameThe 2022 Major League Baseball season continues on Monday, Aug. 8 with several intriguing matchups. One game that fans are going to want to watch is a collision between the Cincinnati Reds (44-63) and New York Mets (70-39).
While the Reds have been far from a good team this year, they’ve been playing much better baseball in recent weeks. They’ve found victories in six of their last eight games, including back-to-back wins over the Milwaukee Brewers this past weekend.
On the other hand, the Mets are also on quite the run. New York has gone 12-2 in its last 14 games, increasing its lead in the NL East race in the process. The Mets previously won a three-game series, 2-1, against the Reds this season, leaving time to tell if history will repeat itself.
Former 2016 first-round pick Justin Dunn gets the start in his first game for the Reds this season. Meanwhile, Cincinnati gets the pleasure of taking on Mets right-handed pitcher Chris Bassitt.
Here’s a look at BetOnline Sportsbook’s odds, along with the best bets to make, ahead of today’s Reds vs. Mets matchup.

Mets Open 3-Game Series as Heavy Favorite
With the Mets being one of baseball’s top teams, it’s unsurprising that they’re opening up the first game of the three-game series against the Reds as the heavy favorite. New York’s -320 moneyline odds to win Monday’s game translates to an implied probability of 76.2%.
Having said that, the Mets haven’t had the most success against the Reds lately. In fact, the two clubs have been somewhat equal, splitting their last eight meetings four games apiece.
Nevertheless, the Mets can’t afford to give the Reds a chance to win tonight. Fortunately, Bassitt has a lot of momentum going following his performance against the Washington Nationals on Aug. 3.
The 33-year-old veteran hurler went for seven innings against the Nationals without allowing a run on six hits. The good news for him is that the Reds have a losing record (30-43) against right-handed pitchers this season, opening up the door for Bassitt to build on his last performance.
One of the more intriguing storylines of tonight’s Reds vs. Mets contest is Dunn’s 2022 MLB season debut. The 26-year-old spent the first chunk of the campaign on the injured list with a shoulder issue before Cincinnati activated him about two weeks ago.
Unfortunately, Dunn’s rehab stint wasn’t exactly encouraging. He went 0-3 over eight starts across Triple-A Louisville and High-A Dayton, pitching to a 6.75 ERA and 1.821 WHIP while surrendering 10.9 hits per nine innings.
It doesn’t help that Dunn has to face some of the league’s most dangerous hitters like Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor in his Major-League return. Alonso leads all Mets with six home runs and 23 RBIs while batting .347 in his last 20 games while Lindor has a team-leading 29 hits with a .387/.472/.587 slash line over that stretch.
As solid as the Reds have looked lately, it’s clear that the Mets are operating on another level. Unless Dunn pitches as he did in the last MLB season (3.75 ERA in 2021), it could be a long night for Cincinnati.
Betting Trends for Reds vs. Mets
- Cincinnati is 6-14 straight up in its last 20 road games against the Mets.
- The Mets are 7-1 straight up in their last eight home games.
- The total has hit the under in six of Cincinnati’s last seven games.
- The total has hit the over in four of the Mets’ last five games against NL opponents.
Reds vs. Mets Prediction and Best Bets
Reds vs. Mets Prediction: Mets to win
Reds vs. Mets Best Bets: Mets -1.5 (-154 at BetOnline) & Over 9 (-106 at BetOnline)
The Mets enter this game as the heavy favorites and I fully expect them to live up to that hype. Despite the Reds’ recent success, the Mets are, clearly, the better team and I think that Dunn’s rehab struggles could come back to bite Cincinnati.
There isn’t much value on the moneyline, so I’m going with the Mets to cover the spread. I’m also taking the over on the total since Cincinnati and New York have averaged a combined 9.7 runs in their last 10 meetings.
