Red Sox vs Blue Jays Predictions & MLB Picks Today (6/17)
Even though June is halfway finished, tonight’s game is only the first Red Sox-Blue Jays matchup of the 2024 campaign. The AL East rivals clashed 17 times during the 2023 season to fairly even results as Boston won seven games to Toronto’s six.
Although the clubs both experienced slow starts to the current schedule, things have turned around lately. The Blue Jays have played to a solid 12-7 SU record in their last 17 games while the Red Sox have won nine of their last 15 outings. Following those successful runs, Boston is now just three games back of the final AL Wild Card spot while Toronto is 4.5 games behind.
The Red Sox might be the underdogs tonight, but they shouldn’t be underestimated. They’re 4-1 SU in their last five games with each of those wins coming against the Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies — the two best teams in the Majors. What’s even more impressive is that Boston scored at least eight runs in each victory, which is likely giving its players a ton of confidence.
As for the Blue Jays, they’ve done well at limiting their opponents’ offense. They’ve allowed an average of 2.2 runs across their last nine games while picking up a trio of shutout wins during that stretch.
Opponents haven’t had much luck scoring against the Blue Jays lately.
Tonight’s game offers the Blue Jays a chance at more dominance over the Red Sox. After all, Toronto won each of its last six games against Boston, outscoring the latter 35-13 on aggregate. That’s without mentioning how the Red Sox are just 5-12 SU on their last 17 trips to Rogers Centre.
The Red Sox will turn to Nick Pivetta as they attempt to buck that trend. While the veteran righty has been good for the most part this season, he’s looking to rebound after surrendering four earned runs on six hits with a quartet of walks in just four innings against the Phillies on June 12. He’s also 1-1 with a 4.29 ERA and seven HRs given up in nine career trips to Toronto.
As for the Blue Jays, they’re hoping that Yusei Kikuchi continues his recent play. The birthday boy has only surrendered one run on seven hits with 11 strikeouts in as many innings in his last two starts. On the flip side, he allowed 10 earned runs on 16 hits in his last two games against the Red Sox.
Blue Jays LHP Yusei Kikuchi has struggled to beat the Red Sox in previous encounters. Will that change tonight?
While I could see this game going either way, it’s best to side with the Red Sox. While the Blue Jays have been playing well, the Red Sox just defeated the two best teams that the MLB has to offer. Given Kikuchi’s all-time struggles against Boston, I see the road team stealing a victory to begin this series.
With that in mind, let’s back the Under on the 7.5-run total. The Under is both 13-9-2 when the Red Sox are the road underdogs and 15-11-1 when the Blue Jays are favored at home this season. The last six Boston-Toronto tilts at Rogers Centre averaged just 7.0 combined runs with each of the last three finishing with fewer than 7.5.
With Pivetta and Kikuchi due for bounce-back performances, take the Under in Toronto.

Best Red Sox vs Blue Jays MLB Player Prop (6/17)
After looking through the various Red Sox vs. Blue Jays player props, I’m going with the Under on Yusei Kikuchi’s 6.5-strikeout total (-106).
In his 14 starts thus far, Kikuchi has finished with the Under on this prop nine times (64.3%). Not only is the Under now 8-2 in his last 10 appearances, but the 33-year-old southpaw has also finished with six or fewer strikeouts in each of his last five starts. Even if the Red Sox have struggled against lefties this season, it’s worth noting that the Under is 6-1 in Kikuchi’s seven career games against the AL East rival.
In other words, don’t expect Kikuchi to rack up strikeouts tonight.
