See Picks & Statistics For The GameIt took until almost mid-May, but the Tampa Bay Rays have finally lost their tenth game of the season. Will they bounce back from last night’s loss to the New York Yankees with a win in this afternoon’s matchup (1:05 pm ET, MLB Network).
After an 8-2 win in Thursday’s series opener at Yankee Stadium, Tampa Bay (30-10) took a 5-4 lead in the top of the eight on Josh Lowe’s three-run homer. But New York (22-18) immediately struck back with what would be the decisive blow, a two-run blast by Anthony Rizzo, and closed it out in the ninth for a 6-5 win.
Who will take the win in this afternoon’s matchup? Read on for today’s Rays vs Yankees prediction and best bets.

Pitching Matchup for Rays vs Yankees
- Tampa Bay Rays: LHP Shane McClanahan (7-0, 1.76 ERA)
- New York Yankees: LHP Nestor Cortes (3-2, 4.74 ERA)
Can the Yankees Solve McClanahan?
Entering the season, both of the southpaws in today’s matchup were expected to be in the AL Cy Young Award race. Last season, McClanahan was one of the favorites for much of the season before finishing sixth in the final voting, while Cortes finished eighth.
But to this point of the season, only McClanahan looks like a serious contender. The 26-year-old has allowed two or fewer runs in each of his eight starts this season, and he has not allowed more than five hits in any of his starts.
As a result, he is firmly in the top three AL Cy Young favorites along with Gerrit Cole and Shohei Ohtani. Entering today, Cole (5-0, 2.22 ERA) is a +350 favorite at BetOnline, with Ohtani at +400 and McClanahan at +600.
Last time out, McClanahan pitched six shutout innings in a 3-0 win at Baltimore last Monday. He tied a season high with four walks, but he allowed only four hits and struck out seven. For the season, he is now 4-0 with a 1.96 ERA in four road starts, and he is 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA in four daytime starts.
Will his record remain unblemished after today? The numbers point that way. The Rays are 6-3 (66.7%) in games following a loss, which is tied for third in MLB. Also, they are 10-5 (66.7%) as a road favorite, which is tied for sixth in MLB.
On the other side, while the Yankees have the league’s fourth best win percentage in games following a win during Aaron Boone’s tenure as manager (280-182, 60.6% – behind only the Dodgers, Astros, and Rays), they are just 9-12 (42.9%) in games following a win this season.
Tampa Bay Rays vs New York Yankees Prediction and Best Bets
Prediction for Rays vs Yankees: Rays to win
Best Bets for Rays vs Yankees: Rays ML (Best Value: Bovada Sportsbook & BetMGM) & Yankees team total under 3.5 runs (Best Value: BetMGM)
Cortes is 2-0 with a 3.13 ERA in four home starts (compared to 1-2, 7.20 ERA in three road starts), and the Yankees are 3-1 in those four starts. But I’m rolling with the hottest hand, and that is McClanahan and the Rays.
Also, if you are into some player prop bets, today’s a good day to get on some Wander Franco props.
Franco (.307, 7 HR, 20 RBI), who is fourth behind Ohtani, Mike Trout, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the AL MVP race according to BetOnline, went 0 for 5 in yesterday’s loss. In each of the last three times he went hitless, he had two hits and scored at least one run in the following game. At BetOnline, he is +165 to have 2+ hits and -115 to score a run.
