The Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets collide for the first time in the 2023 MLB season when they begin a three-game series on Tuesday. New York and Philadelphia sit third and fourth, respectively, in the NL East ahead of this matchup, making tonight’s Phillies vs Mets showdown a must-win contest for both sides.
The Phillies’ road trip continues after splitting a four-game series with the Atlanta Braves, losing 11-4 in their most recent outing. Meanwhile, the Mets return home after going 2-4 on a six-game trip, which concluded with an 11-10 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Sunday.
Can the Phillies add another road win with a strong effort? Or do the Mets have what it takes to prevent their losing streak from reaching three consecutive games?
Here’s a look at everything you know heading into tonight’s Phillies vs Mets showdown, from the latest betting odds to a prediction with the best betting recommendation, courtesy of Betting News.

Phillies vs Mets Game Preview
Playing on the road has been a struggle for the Phillies this season. Not only are they 11-18 overall in away matchups, but they’ve also dropped six of their last eight road games, being outscored 45-27 along the way.
Unfortunately for Rob Thomson’s club, beating their division rivals on the road won’t be easy. For starters, the Mets are on a five-game winning streak at Citi Field, averaging 5.6 runs per game on .274/.347/.470 team batting splits.
Making matters worse is that the Phillies haven’t had much recent luck in Queens, NY. Philadelphia is just 1-6 in its last seven trips to Citi Field, averaging just 2.86 runs along the way. The Phillies’ batting struggles are made even more evident by the fact that they’ve been shut out in their last two road meetings with the Mets.
Of course, generating runs won’t be easy tonight. On top of the Phillies only generating 4.03 runs per game on the road (sixth-worst in MLB), they have to face Mets starter Kodai Senga, who’s been more than solid this season.
Senga has found his groove in his first-ever MLB campaign, going 4-3 with a respectable 3.94 ERA with 61 strikeouts in 48 innings over nine starts. While his play has been reliable overall, he’s been even better at Citi Field where he owns a 1.57 ERA in four starts thus far.
In other words, Ranger Suarez must be better than he has been if the Phillies are to win. The 27-year-old hurler has struggled to find his footing after beginning the 2023 campaign with a back injury. He’s only made three starts so far due to his injuries, recording a 9.82 ERA and 2.000 WHIP through just 11 innings of work.
While Suarez is capable of better play, it’s hard trusting him when he gave up five runs on five hits in as many innings in his most recent start. He’s clearly not feeling like himself and until he is, it’s going to be tough for the Phillies to win.
Phillies vs Mets Game Prediction and Picks
Phillies vs Mets Prediction: Mets 7, Phillies 4
Phillies vs Mets: Mets ML (Best Value: -130 at BetOnline) & Over 8.5 Total Runs (Best Value: -104 at BetOnline)
With Suarez struggling on the mount, I expect the Mets to walk out with the victory tonight. Not only is the pitching advantage on their side, but they’ve also found a ton of recent success against the Phillies at Citi Field. As long as Senga doesn’t collapse on the mount, this is New York’s game to lose.
For another good Phillies vs Mets bet, I’m taking the over on the 8.5-run total. After all, the over is 10-4 in New York’s last 14 games as well as 13-5 in Philadelphia’s 18 most recent outings against the National League. With three of the last four games between these NL East rivals going over 8.5 runs, there’s a solid chance it happens again.
