The New York Mets aim to sweep the rival Philadelphia Phillies when the two clubs collide for the third time in as many days on Thursday, June 1. Back-to-back wins over Philadelphia have left New York within four games of the NL East’s top spot, highlighting just how important this afternoon’s Phillies vs Mets showdown is to the home team.
Despite having nine hits, the Phillies couldn’t muster any offense as they fell 4-1 to the Mets on Wednesday night. New York starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco allowed just one run on six hits with four strikeouts over six innings of work while outfielder Mark Canha led the offensive charge with two hits, a homer, and four RBIs in three at-bats.
Do the Phillies have what it takes to prevent their losing streak from worsening? Or will the Mets send a message by completing the three-game sweep at Citi Field?
Here’s a look at everything you know heading into this afternoon’s Phillies vs Mets showdown, from the latest betting odds to a prediction with the best betting recommendation, courtesy of Betting News.

Phillies vs Mets Game Preview
If the Phillies want to avoid getting swept, their batters must step up. While they’ve racked up 11 hits over the first two games of this series, they only have one run to show for it.
Having said that, offensive struggles on the road aren’t a new issue for the Phillies. They averaged only 2.8 runs over their previous 10 road games, batting an abysmal .225 along the way. Unsurprisingly, the lack of runs had a negative impact on the Phillies, highlighted by their 2-8 record over that stretch.
Key names just haven’t performed as expected during this time. For example, Kyle Schwarber is only slashing .097/.333/.323 with 14 strikeouts in 31 at-bats in his last 10 road outings. The offensively-gifted quartet of Trea Turner, Nick Castellanos, J.T. Realmuto, and Bryce Harper only have one home run between them since May 14.
It’ll be interesting to see if the Phillies can get anything going against Mets starter Max Scherzer. The three-time NL Cy Young winner has been terrific in recent weeks, going 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA and 19 strikeouts over 18 innings in his last 19 starts. Furthermore, he hasn’t surrendered a run in 11 innings pitched at Citi Field this season.
Scherzer also tends to step up when facing his NL East rival. Over his last eight games against the Phillies, the 38-year-old is 5-1 with a 2.35 ERA while averaging 11.2 strikeouts per nine innings.
The Phillies’ chances of success will depend on what version of Taijuan Walker they get on the mound today. While he was strong to start the season, the ex-Met has had his fair has a 6.75 ERA while allowing 39 hits in 32 innings over his last seven starts.
And, unfortunately for Walker, his former club plays well against right-handed pitchers. The Mets boast an impressive 20-13 record against righties this season, which includes going 6-3 against those in the NL East. On top of that, they’ve also recorded a .328 on-base percentage (No. 7 in MLB) and just 279 strikeouts (third-fewest) against righties.
Another thing working in the Mets’ favor is their home dominance against the Phillies. New York has won eight of its past nine meetings with Philadelphia at Citi Field, outscoring its NL East foe by an average of 2.8 runs.
At the end of the day, it looks like the Phillies have an uphill battle ahead of them.
Phillies vs Mets Game Prediction and Picks
Phillies vs Mets Prediction: Mets 5, Phillies 3
Phillies vs Mets: Mets -1.5 (Best Value: +116 at BetOnline) & Under 8.5 Total Runs (Best Value: -106 at BetOnline)
The Phillies’ bats have looked terrible in this series, leading to my belief that the Mets complete the sweep today. On top of their dominance over Philly at Citi Field, they have also won seven straight home games ahead of this afternoon, so momentum is on their side.
With New York nearly beating Philadelphia by three runs per game in their recent clashes in Queens, covering the 1.5-run spread won’t be difficult.
I also like the under on the 8.5-run total as another solid Phillies vs Mets bet. For starters, the Phillies’ recent offensive struggles are well-documented. Secondly, each of the last five matchups between these clubs at Citi Field experienced the under, averaging just 3.4 runs per matchup.
Taking into account how this series has gone thus far, I have a hard time imagining that trend changing.
