See Picks & Statistics For The GameThe Baltimore Orioles still face long odds to reach the MLB playoffs, but with the Seattle Mariners and Tampa Bay Rays not out of reach and not thriving, they still very much have a chance.
And after a resounding win at Fenway Park last night, the O’s will have an opportunity to further boost those chances tonight in the second game of their series with the Boston Red Sox.
With Seattle blowing a nine-run lead at Kansas City on Sunday, the Mariners threw away an opportunity to put some extra daylight between themselves and the Orioles, who dropped their last two against the Houston Astros after wins on Thursday and Friday.
But with Seattle’s Sunday shocker and Baltimore’s blowout of Boston last night, the O’s are only 3.5 games back of the M’s with nine games left for them and ten for Seattle.
While the bats led the way in last night’s 14-8 win over Boston, two huge efforts on the mound keyed Baltimore’s important wins over Houston last week.
Kyle Bradish outdueled Justin Verlander with 8.2 outstanding innings last Thursday, with Dean Kremer going the distance in a shutout the next night. They’ll be counted on to deliver again over the next two games, starting with Bradish tonight.

The fact that the Orioles are still in the hunt is unlikely in itself, and it’s even more unlikely that Bradish is one of the key reasons why they are.
A month ago, the rookie righty was 1-5 with a 6.25 ERA. Then he threw eight shutout innings in a 2-0 win in Houston on August 26, helping Baltimore stunningly take two of three at Minute Maid Park.
It hasn’t been a completely smooth ride since, as two starts this month against the Blue Jays didn’t go very well. But in addition to shutting down the Astros again last week at home, he threw seven shutout innings in a win at Cleveland and was also outstanding in a hard-luck 1-0 loss against the Red Sox over two weeks ago.
Bradish struggled in his lone trip to Fenway earlier this season, allowing six runs and six hits in 1.2 innings on May 27, and three visits to Toronto have not gone all that well (0-2, 7.24 ERA).
But the Orioles have had a solid record of success in his starts, going 13-8 overall, including a 7-2 record in his road starts.
Where he hasn’t pitched so well, he has often gotten great run support. If that happens tonight, it will likely be a winning night.
- Baltimore has scored five or more runs 11 times in Bradish’s 21 starts. They are 10-1 in those 11 games.
- In the 10 games in which they scored fewer than five runs, the O’s are 3-7.
Will he get adequate support tonight? It will require an uncharacteristic performance for Wacha, who has allowed more than two runs only once in nine home starts.
Home and Away Splits for Michael Wacha
- Home (9 starts): 5-1, 1.72 ERA, .195 OBA, 0.92 WHIP
- Away (12 starts): 6-0, 3.46 ERA, .238 OBA, 1.17 WHIP
It hasn’t been a great season overall for Boston’s starting rotation, but Wacha is having an excellent year. And the Red Sox are 15-6 in his 21 starts this season, including an 8-1 record in his home starts.
Overall, the former All-Star has allowed more than three runs only four times in 21 starts. And he is 2-0 with a 2.31 ERA in two starts against Baltimore this season.
It’s hard to gauge what you are going to get from a team with nothing to play for at this point. The Red Sox are in that position, and they enter tonight with six straight losses.
But they showed a lot of fight in their series against the Yankees despite losing all four games, and their best pitcher being on the mound tonight puts them in a strong position to do some spoiling.
