Sigh… I am going back to the worst scoring team in the first five innings to start the 2025 season. “How bad could they possibly be?” Dead last. Just 0.5 runs per first five innings. That bad. However, the Phillies are still averaging over six runs per game, and their incredible offense is due for an explosion.
Today, the Phillies face Kyle Freeland, who posted an ERA near six on the road last season. He now holds the worst pitcher rating of the day, according to Batters-Box.com. The Rockies’ left-hander also has the worst average hitter matchup wOBA and ISO on the slate, while allowing the fifth most hard contact. He faces a lineup featuring four elite-rated hitters, zero poor-rated hitters, one above the league strikeout rate, and three above the league ground ball rate.
This Phillies team racked up over 2.5 runs per game a year ago. Their bats are due for an explosion, and at plus money, it is well worth the sprinkle.

Both hitters have elite ratings on Batters-Box.com, with Shohei Ohtani holding the second highest rating of the day and Kyle Schwarber ranking fourth in the Rockies vs. Phillies game.
When Schwarber has an elite rating, he records a hit just 56% of the time, based on a 111-game sample size. However, he has been seeing the ball better than anyone on the Phillies, batting .353 with three home runs and an OPS of 1.303. I love him to get a hit at -155, but I was chasing plus money.
Adding Ohtani here feels right. With the second highest rating of the day, he records a hit 75% of the time when elite, based on a 148-game sample. The Dodgers slugger is batting .280 with two home runs and an OPS of .998 to start the season. He has only one hit in his last three games, which makes me like this even more. Ohtani is a player who does damage nearly every night, and he is due for an explosive performance, especially against a pitcher who allows over 40% hard contact.
