See Picks & Statistics For The GameAfter a bright start to the season, the Miami Marlins have come back to earth over the last week. Will their skid come to an end tonight in the second game of their series against the San Diego Padres? The outcome does not look promising.
This time last week, the Marlins were in the midst of a seven-game winning streak, which saw them claim a series win in Atlanta, a road sweep of the Washington Nationals, and take the first two games of their home series with the Seattle Mariners.
But Seattle took the series finale last Sunday to snap Miami’s streak, and the Marlins have yet to win again since. Last night’s 2-1 loss to open their four-game set in San Diego was their fifth straight loss.
Tonight, Don Mattingly will look to his ace, Sandy Alcantara, who will be trying to bounce back from a bad outing in Seattle. Alcantara will need to outduel Yu Darvish, who has had a great start to the season other than one major outlier.
Which way do we lean with our Marlins vs. Padres prediction and best bets? Let’s break it all down.

Will Miami Have Another Cold Night at the Plate Against Improved Darvish?
In the first four losses of their current skid, the Marlins had a bigger issue with allowing runs than scoring runs, as they were outscored 28-18 in losing to Seattle last Sunday and then getting swept at home by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Last night, however, they got a solid six-inning effort on the mound from Jesus Luzardo but couldn’t generate anything at the plate against Nick Martinez and San Diego’s pen. Martinez allowed one run, four hits, and one walk, and the pen finished off the 2-1 win with two scoreless innings.
Will they have more success tonight against Yu Darvish? If the five-time All-Star continues to pitch like he has recently, it will be another long night for the Marlins.
Darvish has shaken off the final few months of the 2021 season and started strong in 2022, posting four quality starts in five starts.
The lone anomaly was against the San Francisco Giants in his second start of the season, as he allowed nine runs and eight hits in 1.2 innings as the Giants rolled 13-2 on April 12. In his other four starts, he is 2-0 with a 1.46 ERA and has allowed only four runs (all earned) in 24.2 innings.
Darvish isn’t putting up major strikeout numbers so far, as his season high is eight. But the only thing that could really stand to improve in his outings has nothing to do with him. His last start, which was against the Pittsburgh Pirates this past Friday, was the first time the Padres scored more than three runs in one of his starts this season.
In fact, dating back to his last 14 starts last season, the Padres have scored more than three runs only four times over his last 19 starts.
Miami Marlins vs. San Diego Padres May 6 Prediction and Best Bets
Marlins vs. Padres Prediction: Padres to win
Marlins vs. Padres Best Bet: Padres ML (-130 at Bovada Sportsbook)
While run support is still something to be concerned about for Darvish, things line up very well for the Padres in this spot.
They also line up rather well for Marlins vs. Padres betting, as the Padres’ price would be far more inflated were the Marlins not throwing their ace tonight.
Relevant trends line up favorably for the home team as well, as the Padres are 5-1 as a home favorite, while the Marlins are just 3-5 as a road underdog. The Padres are also 10-6 after a win, while the Marlins are 5-7 after a loss.
