Mets vs Yankees Predictions & MLB Picks Today (7/23)
Pressure is mounting as the MLB’s two New York-based teams enter the second half of the 2024 Subway Series. The Mets must keep winning to hold onto the NL’s final wild-card spot as seven teams sit within 4.5 games of them. Meanwhile, the Yankees are the AL’s No. 1 wild-card club but that could change if they don’t consistently win games.
Playing at home also doesn’t give the Yankees much of an edge. Although they’re 27-21 SU at Yankee Stadium this season, the Bronx Bombers have won only four of their last 15 home games dating back to the middle of June. At the same time, that might not matter much given the Mets are only 4-6 SU across their 10 previous away contests.
It’ll be interesting to see if the Mets build off their success from the first half of the Subway Series. After all, they defeated the Yankees on back-to-back nights last month, outscoring the former 21-9 on aggregate in the process. The Yankees have since gone 8-12 SU in the following 20 games whereas the Mets are 12-9 SU during that stretch.
Do the Mets have what it takes to take a 3-0 season series lead over the Yankees tonight?
Following last month’s victories, the Mets are now 11-6 SU in their last 17 meetings with the Yankees. Unfortunately, that success doesn’t follow them to the Bronx. The Mets have lost six of their last nine trips to Yankee Stadium with four of those defeats coming by multiple runs.
Victory will be harder to achieve if Mets LHP Jose Quintana can’t bounce back. Although his play was beginning to turn around lately, the veteran southpaw reverted to his old ways by allowing five earned runs and four homers on six hits across 5 2/3 innings in an 8-5 loss to the Colorado Rockies last week. He’s also won just one of his last six appearances against the Yankees.
Speaking of the home team, seeing how Luis Gil performs this evening will be interesting. The Yankees RHP struggled at the end of June but has since gotten back on track, surrendering just two earned runs with 16 strikeouts in his last 12 2/3 innings. He’ll also be hungry to prove himself after being torched for five earned runs in 4 1/3 innings by the Mets last month.
Which version of Yankees RHP Luis Gil will appear on the mound tonight?
After being swept at Citi Field last month, look for the Yankees to win tonight. The Bronx Bombers have momentum stemming from yesterday’s 9-1 blowout over the Tampa Bay Rays. The Mets won’t go down without a fight, however, Quintana’s pitching is too erratic for my liking.
But no matter who wins, I expect the Over on the 9-run total to be hit. The Over is 5-2 in the Mets’ last seven games (9.0 runs per game) and 4-1 in the Yankees’ last five (9.6 per). Four of the last six Mets-Yankees matchups also surpassed their projected total, averaging a combined 11.0 runs along the way.
Considering how these Subway Series rivals averaged 15.0 runs in their first two meetings of the season, you can’t go wrong with the Over here.

Best Mets vs Yankees MLB Player Prop (7/23)
Are you hungry for a Mets vs. Yankees player prop? Consider taking Aaron Judge to finish with o1.5 total bases (+117).
Judge has been playing at an MVP-caliber level throughout the season and his latest stretch cements that fact. The six-time MLB All-Star is slashing .409/.606/.864 in his last seven games while racking up nine hits and three HRs along the way. He amassed 19 total bases in those games (2.7 per contest) while finishing with the Over five times.
The Over is also 4-2 in Judge’s last six home games as well as 5-2 in his last seven encounters with the Mets. Considering how he racked up 10 TBs at Citi Field last month, it’s safe to expect big things from Judge tonight.
Best Mets vs. Yankees MLB Prop Bet: Aaron Judge o1.5 Total Bases (+117)
