See Picks & Statistics For The GameThis past offseason, the Oakland A’s traded starting pitchers Chris Bassitt and Sean Manaea to National League pennant hopefuls. The former teammates will face off in San Diego on Wednesday night, as the Padres take on the New York Mets in the finale of their three-game series.
Bassitt was traded to the Mets in March, and he is a vital part of a rotation that is currently missing both Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer. Manaea was traded to the Padres just four days before Opening Day, and he enters this matchup among the league’s leaders in quality starts.
Last night, the Mets were shut out for just the second time all season, as Yu Darvish tossed seven shutout innings before turning over finishing duties to Adrian Morejon, who closed the Mets out with two scoreless frames in his first appearance of the season.

Manaea Seeks Substantial Support to Help Steer San Diego to Series Success
Manaea may have just two wins in ten starts this season, but his record is not indicative of how well he has pitched in most of his starts thus far.
In his most recent start, he allowed one run, five hits, and two walks and struck out eight in six innings against the Milwaukee Brewers this past Thursday. But he went without a win for the fifth time in six starts, as the Brewers overcame a 4-1 deficit in the ninth, scoring four runs and walking it off to deny Manaea a deserved win.
He doesn’t have much to show for his eight quality starts this season, but he does rank inside the top 10 in the league in that area and will certainly get his due, both against the Mets and going forward, if he continues to pitch well.
Manaea’s splits are better on the road than at Petco Park, but they are skewed by his lone legitimately rough outing this season, in which he gave up seven runs in 4.1 innings in a loss to the Dodgers on April 24.
His former rotation mate has had some ups and down as of late. Bassitt had a 2.34 ERA across his first seven starts with the Mets, but he has allowed 16 earned runs in 22.2 innings across his four most recent starts.
The 33-year-old righty has much better home splits than road splits, going 3-1 with a 2.25 ERA in four home starts and 1-1 with a 4.63 ERA in six road starts. But as is the case with Manaea, one bad start clouds those numbers, as he allowed eight runs in 4.1 innings against the Giants on May 24.
New York Mets vs. San Diego Padres Prediction and Best Bets
Mets vs. Padres Prediction: Padres to win
Mets vs. Padres Best Bets: Padres ML (-112 at BetOnline & BetUS)
No team has been better at bouncing back from losses than the Mets, who are 16-3 following a loss this season.
But the Padres are good value to take the rubber game and the series behind a strong effort by Manaea and some solid run support.
In his first six starts, Manaea only got four or more runs of support only twice. But the veteran southpaw has been backed by four or more runs in each of his last four starts, and though he is winless in those four starts, continuing to pitch well and getting adequate run support will pay off for him against the Mets.
