See Picks & Statistics For The GameOne of the best teams in baseball takes on one of the best pitchers in baseball in one of the top games on Friday’s MLB slate, as Pablo Lopez and the Miami Marlins visit the Houston Astros.
The Marlins enter this series five games under .500 and fourth in the NL East, but they have two of the leading NL Cy Young Award candidates in Lopez and Sandy Alcantara. As of today, Alcantara (+400) is now the favorite, as per BetOnline’s latest odds, while Lopez (+1200) is fourth, behind Alcantara, Corbin Burnes (+550), and Joe Musgrove (+550).
Alcantara pitched Wednesday–and was outstanding against the Washington Nationals–so the Astros see only Lopez. The Marlins will have their hands full in the opener as well, as Garcia is coming off of back-to-back solid starts.

Lopez, Garcia Seek to End Winless Streaks
Lopez will be looking for his first win in over a month, as he has not won since May 7. His opposite number, Luis Garcia, will also be looking to end a winless run tonight, with his last win coming on May 12.
Lopez was fantastic in April, going 3-0 with a 0.39 ERA in four starts. But after allowing just one run in April, he has come back down to earth a bit. Over his last seven starts, Lopez has allowed three or more earned runs four times, including last Saturday’s outing against the San Francisco Giants, in which he allowed four runs in seven innings.
Garcia has been a bit more up and down this season, and things are actually up going into this matchup thanks to back-to-back quality starts against the Seattle Mariners and Kansas City Royals. But after sitting at 3-1 after six starts, Garcia has gone four starts without a win.
An alarming lack of run support is the big issue at the moment for Garcia, with the Astros managing just four runs in those four starts. Against the Royals, they were blanked in a 6-0 loss, the fifth time that they have been shut out this season. Notably, all five shutouts have come against teams currently with a losing record (Angels twice and Mariners, Rangers, and Royals all once).
Fortunately for Garcia, trends heavily lean in favor of the home team in this matchup.
Notable Trends for the Marlins & Astros
- Houston is 32-16 as a favorite this season, while Miami is 11-19 as an underdog.
- As a home favorite, the Astros are 15-6, while the Marlins are 7-12.
- After a loss, the Astros are 14-6, while the Marlins are 10-14 after a win.
Miami Marlins vs. Houston Astros Prediction and Best Bets
Marlins vs. Astros Prediction: Astros to win
Marlins vs. Astros Best Bets: Astros ML (-148 at BetUS) & UNDER 8 (-118 at BetOnline)
With Lopez as the opposing pitcher, the Astros can be backed at shorter odds than you would typically be able to when they are a home favorite.
And that is a spot that must be taken advantage of. Houston surprisingly lost two of three at home to Seattle this week, which was their first home series loss in a month and a half.
It has also been a month and a half since the Marlins won a road series, and since that sweep of the Nationals, they have won just four of 15 road games.
Runs should be hard to come by at Minute Maid Park, but look for normal service to resume and for the Astros to eke out enough run support to fend off Lopez and the Marlins.
