In the first two games of their series with the San Francisco Giants, the Houston Astros have failed to generate much against starting pitching.
They were able to overcome it on Monday night thanks to a five-run seventh inning, but they were unable to in last night’s 2-0 loss. Anthony DeSclafani tossed eight shutout innings and allowed only three hits, and Camilo Doval finished things off in the ninth for his fourth save of the season.
Who will take the win in this afternoon’s rubber game between San Francisco (12-17, 5-10 away) and Houston (16-14, 8-10 home)? Read on for our Giants vs Astros prediction, as well as our best bets for the matchup.

Bounce-Back Trends Point to Series Win for Valdez & Houston
A month into the season, the Astros are still searching for consistency and still have yet to have a sustained hot streak.
Their biggest struggles have been at home, where they have won just one of five series thus far and are in the bottom half of the league in runs scored per game. They have scored five or more runs in consecutive home games just once so far, and that is just one of three instances overall in which they have scored five or more runs in two more games in a row.
But that segues into some potentially good news for today’s series finale against the Giants.
Last night was the 14th time this season that the Astros have been held to four or fewer runs this season. And in the first 13 instances, they have scored five or more runs in the following game ten times.
If Houston can score five or more runs this afternoon, that will likely lead to a positive outcome. The Astros are 14-2 this season when they score five or more runs, and all 14 wins have come by multiple runs.
This will also fall in line with Framber Valdez’s recent starts. After receiving a no-decision in his first start this season, he has alternated losses and wins in his last five starts.
In his most recent start, Valdez took the loss in Friday’s series opener with the Phillies despite posting the same stat line (7 IP, 8 H, 3 R) that he did in winning in Atlanta the previous Saturday. So, if things go according to the pattern, he is in line to get a win today, and the Astros are in line to cover the run line.
San Francisco Giants vs Houston Astros Prediction and Best Bets
Prediction for Giants vs Astros: Astros to win
Best Bets for Giants vs Astros: Astros -1.5 (Best Value: BetUS)
The lone caveat to following the trends is that the Astros have lost all four of Valdez’s home starts to this point this season. However, everything else lines up, including Houston being 9-4 in games following a loss and San Francisco being 4-7 in games following a win.
Additionally, things haven’t gone well on the road for Webb. He is 0-3 with a 6.11 ERA and has allowed four runs in each of his three road starts this season. He’s also not receiving a great deal of run support, with the Giants managing more than three runs in only one of the six games he has started in 2023.
