See Picks & Statistics For The GameLos Angeles Dodgers pitcher Tony Gonsolin isn’t among the top favorites for this season’s NL Cy Young Award, but if he continues to pitch as he has thus far this season, he won’t be overlooked all year.
Today, Gonsolin goes for his fifth win of the season as the Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks meet for the third game of their four-game series at Chase Field.
The Dodgers have taken the first two games, bagging a 14-1 win in Thursday’s opener and a 6-4 win last night. Today, the NL West leaders are seeking their 12th win in 14 games, which would also extend a rather astounding run of misfortune for Diamondbacks pitcher Merrill Kelly against his least favorite opponent.

Will Merrill’s Miserable Run Against L.A. Continue?
In 35 appearances (27 starts) from 2019-21, Gonsolin compiled a 10-5 record with a 2.85 ERA. Those solid numbers appear to be translating well to a full-time role as a starter this season. Through his first eight starts in 2022, the 28-year-old righty has allowed multiple runs only twice.
As it happens, both times have come against the Diamondbacks. The Dodgers came out on the losing end the first time around, when Gonsolin allowed three runs (two earned) in four innings of a 5-3 loss at Chase Field on April 26.
In his most recent start against the D-backs, he allowed two runs, three hits, and two walks and struck out seven in six innings, receiving a no-decision in a 5-4 win when the two teams met at Dodger Stadium almost two weeks ago.
In four road starts, Gonsolin is 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA, with only five runs (four earned) allowed in 18 innings. And in May, he is 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA in four starts.
But as impressive as he has been thus far, BetOnline’s latest NL Cy Young Award odds have him at +6000, well behind the top contenders.
A win over the Diamondbacks won’t move the needle too much with regards to his Cy Young odds, but it will extend a rather rough record for his opposite number.
In nine career starts against the Dodgers, Kelly is 0-6 with a 5.89 ERA. Of those nine starts, Arizona has won only one, which was an 11-5 home win on August 29, 2019.
This season, he is 0-2 in two starts, and his worst start of the young season came against the Dodgers eleven days ago. In a 12-3 loss at Dodger Stadium, he allowed eight runs, five hits, and four walks in just two innings.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Arizona Diamondbacks Prediction and Best Bets
Dodgers vs. Diamondbacks Prediction: Dodgers to win
Dodgers vs. Diamondbacks Best Bets: UNDER 9 (-107 at BetUS)
Look for the Dodgers to take care of business and secure a series win, but for betting purposes, we’re looking at the over/under. There have been combined double-digit runs in each of the first two games of this series, but trends for the season favor the under tonight at Chase Field.
In games in which the Diamondbacks have been a home underdog, the under is 11-4-1. And in games in which the Dodgers have a been a road favorite, the under is 14-8-2.
There have been nine or fewer combined runs in six of Gonsolin’s eight starts this season, including three of his four road starts. And in Kelly’s nine starts this season, there have been nine or fewer runs six times, including four of his five home starts.
