After losing 110 games last season, the Arizona Diamondbacks have been one of the pleasant surprises of the start of the 2022 MLB season. Tonight, they take a winning road record to Los Angeles and Dodger Stadium, where they will face a team looking to put a rough week behind them.
The Diamondbacks also had 18 wins at this time last year, but they were already in the midst of a run where they would lose 50 of 58 games after a 15-13 start.
Anything is certainly possible, as that disastrous spell showed. But it does not look likely that they will experience a similar spell in 2022, even though they make the trip to L.A. after losing two of three at home to the Chicago Cubs.
The Dodgers, meanwhile, remain atop the NL West, but they lost five of seven games last week, including three of four at home to the Philadelphia Phillies. But they averted the sweep with a late rally and a walk-off win on Sunday night, so they head into the new week with something to hang their hats on.
In tonight’s opener, the hosts will face a very familiar foe in Madison Bumgarner, who will be making his 38th career start against the Dodgers.

Can Bumgarner Continue His Resurgent Start Against the World Series Favorites?
After racking up a 119-92 record, a 3.13 ERA, and 1,794 strikeouts in ten-plus seasons with the San Francisco Giants, Bumgarner joined the Diamondbacks following the 2019 season.
His first two seasons in the desert didn’t go well at all, individually or collectively. The Diamondbacks finished at the bottom of the NL West in both seasons, and he went a combined 8-14 with a 5.07 ERA in 35 starts across 2020 and 2021.
In the past two seasons, the Diamondbacks were at their worst on the road, going 48-63 at home and 29-82 on the road. Bumgarner was also at his worst on the road. In 20 road starts over the past two seasons, he was 3-10 with a 5.45 ERA.
But 2022 has seen a resurgence for Arizona and the veteran southpaw. He has not allowed more than two runs in any start so far, and he is 1-1 with a 1.64 ERA in three road starts to date. The Diamondbacks have won two of those three starts and are 8-6 on the road so far this season.
Bumgarner knows Dodger Stadium about as well as he does any other current opposition venue other than AT&T Park in San Francisco.
Excluding the Giants, the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets are the only two teams against whom he has a better road ERA than the 2.72 ERA he has in 23 appearances (22 starts) he has against the Dodgers.
It remains to be seen if Bumgarner can continue his resurgence, but after two forgettable seasons, he is returning to the pitcher he was for much of his time in San Francisco.
Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Los Angeles Dodgers May 16 Prediction and Best Bets
Diamondbacks vs. Dodgers Prediction: Dodgers to win
Diamondbacks vs. Dodgers Best Bets: Dodgers -1.5 (-108 at BetOnline) and UNDER 8.5 (-115 at BetUS and Bovada Sportsbook)
While Bumgarner has had a nice resurgence, Gonsolin has been brilliant in all but one start thus far this season, making a strong case to remain in the rotation even if the temptation arises to pursue an arm via a trade later this season.
Gonsolin has been at his best at home, going 2-0 with a 0.60 ERA in three starts. In 15 innings, he has allowed just one run.
Walks have been somewhat of an issue, as he has seven at home and 13 in 27 innings overall. But he has allowed only 16 hits and has been stingy with allowing runs to cross the plate, giving up multiple runs in just one start.
The Dodgers are a perfect 3-0 in his home starts and have won each by multiple runs, outscoring the Reds, Braves, and Giants 17-3 in the process.
Astoundingly, last night’s win over the Phillies was the Dodgers’ first one-run win and just their third one-run game of the season. So, if you are backing the Dodgers to defeat the Diamondbacks, as we are here, the -1.5 is the value move, even with an improved Bumgarner on the bump.
Also, trends line up very, very favorably for the under in this matchup. The under is 9-1 in Arizona’s division games and 12-4 after their losses, and it is 8-3 in the Dodgers’ division games and 13-5-1 after their wins.
