Cubs @ Dodgers Analysis & Breakdown
Chicago scored 5 runs last night against Walker Buehler; en-route to a 10-4 victory.
The Cubs scored 10 runs last night and clearly looked like the better team. The Dodgers had Walker Buehler on the mound and his struggles this season continued. Buehler went 5 innings, giving up 9 hits, 5 earned runs and 2 home runs.
Chicago got just 4.2 innings from their starter, Kyle Hendricks; he gave up just 4 hits and 2 earned runs. Both teams scored 14 runs between them, adding in 3 combined home runs.
Mookie Betts, Cody Bellinger, and Michael Bush all found their way out of the yard and I’m hoping we see some of that same type of magic, once again.
Tonight’s matchup features 3 pitchers from Japan, all absolute studs. The Dodgers will have Yoshinobu Yamamoto on the mound today, he’s playing in his first game since June 15th and he’s doing it against fellow countryman, Shot Imanaga.
Both pitchers have ERA’s below 3 this year and have gone a combined 18-5 on the year. Lastly, but certainly not least, the only Japanese pitcher who isn’t pitching today; Shohei Ohtani.

Mookie Betts is hitting 0.429 this month.
Mookie may finally be back in proper form and I bet a lot of it has to do with post-season looming. Betts’ is hitting 0.429 through 8 games this month, he’s scored 8 runs, cashed in 11 RBI, and hit 3 home runs.
Mookie’s slid into the 2-spot of this Dodgers lineup and it’s a spot it took him a little while to adjust to. He hit just 0.271 in the month of June, recording just 8 extra-base hits in 18 games; sounds like a lot but not for Betts.
He’s hitting 0.328 against lefties this season with a 0.508 SLG. Night games have been a spot he’s thrived in all year, hitting 0.323 at night with a 0.547 SLG and 14 home runs. Mookie’s 0/2 in his career against Imanaga but with both at-bats coming in Chicago.

Ohtani couldn’t get us the home run last night, and he’s had just one game against his Japanese teammate; going 0/2 with a strikeout. Both Ohtani and Imanaga play for the Japanese National Team, alongside Dodgers starter Yamamoto.
All 3 players played together in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, beating the United States in the Championship Game. Now all 3 will take the field again, with two of them now on the opposing side; Ohtani and Yamamoto.
In Ohtani’s first season with the Dodgers, he’s been unable to pitch a single game. That didn’t stop him from finding another way to elevate his game, so he started stealing bases. Last night Ohtani recorded his 47th stolen base of the year, almost double his career high.
Shohei’s also managed to play 141 of the Dodgers 144 games so far this year; leading the team in hits, runs, RBI, home runs and stolen bases. He’s going to become the 1st MLB player to ever record 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season, and I can’t stress enough how hard that really is.
Ohtani is ready to play post-season baseball for the first time in his career and with just 18 games left, it’s time to finish strong.
