See Picks & Statistics For The GameLast night, the Milwaukee Brewers received some huge contributions to get a big road win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
That sets them up well for a potential series win in L.A. with their ace on the mound tonight in a matchup of NL Cy Young Award hopefuls.
After a rough weekend at Wrigley Field, the Brew Crew faced long odds for their opener against MLB’s best team.
But Eric Lauer pitched five shutout innings, four relievers combined to finish off the shutout, and Luis Urias homered (off of Julio Urias – no relation) and drove in two runs to lead Milwaukee to a 4-0 win.
Tonight, the Brewers will try to secure the series win with Corbin Burnes on the mound opposite Tony Gonsolin. Which contender will help their Cy Young hopes tonight at Dodger Stadium?

Burnes, Gonsolin Set for Must-See Duel
This matchup may start late for viewers in the Eastern time zone, but it is one not to be missed wherever you are.
Miami Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara continues to lead the way atop the NL Cy Young Award odds, entering today as a -250 favorite at BetOnline.
But Burnes (+500) and Gonsolin (+1000) are in hot pursuit and could close the gap with dominant performances tonight.
Burnes is second in the league in strikeouts (187), second in OBA (.185), fourth in WHIP (0.93), fifth among qualified starting pitchers in WAR (4.4), seventh in ERA (2.48), and tied for eighth in quality starts (17).
Gonsolin, meanwhile, is first in the league in OBA (.169) and WHIP (0.86), tied for first in wins (15), third in ERA (2.12), and tied for eighth among qualified starting pitchers in WAR (4.2).
Burnes wasn’t at his sharpest last Thursday against the Dodgers in Milwaukee (5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 6 K), but he picked up the win, his first in four August starts.
While his dominant outings haven’t been as frequent as hoped, Burnes has allowed more than three runs only three times all season, which makes him one of the most consistent pitchers in the game.
As was the case last season, Burnes has been at his best away from American Family Field this season.
Road Splits for Corbin Burnes in 2022 (11 Starts)
- 4-2, 1.94 ERA, 69.2 IP, 42 H, 17 R (15 ER), 5 HR, 20 BB, 77 K, .174 OBA, 0.89 WHIP
Of his 17 quality starts this season, nine have come on the road, and he has allowed two or fewer runs nine times on the road.
Gonsolin had his shakiest month in July, during which he took his first loss of the season after starting 11-0. But he has bounced back in August and really kicked his Cy Young campaign into high gear by going 3-0 with a 0.48 ERA in three starts.
He dazzled against the Brewers last Wednesday in the Dodgers’ 2-1 win, allowing only two hits and one walk and striking out eight in seven shutout innings.
While Burnes has been at his best on the road, Gonsolin has been at his best at home.
Home Splits for Tony Gonsolin in 2022 (10 Starts)
- 8-1, 1.53 ERA, 59 IP, 30 H, 10 R (10 ER), 5 HR, 16 BB, 49 K, .149 OBA, 0.78 WHIP
Of Gonsolin’s 11 quality starts this season, six have come at home, and he has allowed two or fewer runs nine times at home. To date, the Washington Nationals and AL All-Star team are the only opponents to get more than two runs off of Gonsolin at Dodger Stadium this season.
Milwaukee Brewers vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Prediction and Picks
Brewers vs. Dodgers Prediction: Dodgers to win
Brewers vs. Dodgers Picks: Dodgers ML (Best Value: -145 at BetMGM) & Brewers/Dodgers under 7.5 (Best Value: +100 at Bovada Sportsbook & BetMGM)
There’s not a lot of room to work with regards to the over/under, but both Brewers-Dodgers matchups featuring these two pitchers last week were low-scoring games, as was last night’s series opener at Dodger Stadium.
But who is the best bet for the win? As good as Burnes has been on the road, it’s hard to look past how good Gonsolin has been at home.
The Dodgers have been pretty solid in bouncing back from losses this season, sitting fourth in the league in win percentage in games following a loss (23-13, .639).
By comparison, the Brewers have been pretty so-so with stringing wins together, registering a 34-30 (.531) mark in games following a win this season.
All of that only means so much in a matchup like this, but this is a rare time to get the Dodgers around -150 on the ML (or shorter, if you grab it in a timely manner). And at home, at that.
And even with the reigning NL Cy Young winner on the mound for the opposition tonight, this is an opportunity not to be passed up.
