See Picks & Statistics For The GameTonight, one of the biggest rivalries in American sports will be renewed for the first time this MLB season as the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox face off at Yankee Stadium.
Both teams enter this series after a disappointing result against AL Central opposition. The Red Sox (31-32, 14-16 away) just lost two of three on the road against the Cleveland Guardians, while the Yankees (37-27, 20-15 home) surprisingly dropped two of three at home against the Chicago White Sox, who have one of the worst road records in the league.
Will the Bronx Bombers strike the first blow with AL Cy Young Award hopeful Gerrit Cole on the mound? Read on for our prediction and best bets for tonight’s Red Sox vs Yankees game.

Pitching Matchup for Red Sox vs Yankees
- Boston Red Sox: RHP Garrett Whitlock (5 starts, 2-2, 5.61 ERA)
- New York Yankees: RHP Gerrit Cole (13 starts, 7-0, 2.82 ERA)
Will Cole Shake Off Recent Hard Times at Home?
Cole’s first several home starts this season couldn’t have gone much better. He allowed only one run in his first four home starts, and in his first six home starts, he recorded a 1.18 ERA, allowing just five runs in 38 innings.
But in his last two home starts, he has allowed 11 runs (10 earned) in 11 innings, and after not allowing a single home run in his first five home starts, he has allowed two in each of his last three home starts.
But thanks to excellent run support in those last two home starts against the Baltimore Orioles and San Diego Padres, Cole is still unbeaten for the season, and the Yankees are a perfect 8-0 in his home starts in 2023.
He also got good run support in his most recent start, even though he didn’t need it as much as he did against the Padres and Orioles. Against the Dodgers last Saturday, he allowed just one run and four hits in six innings as the Yankees picked up a 6-3 win in Los Angeles.
The Yankees have scored six or more runs in five of Cole’s last six starts, including each of the last three, and if they keep it going against the Red Sox tonight, it should be a good omen.
The Yankees have scored six or more runs in 34 of Cole’s starts in pinstripes, and they have a 33-1 record in those games. The lone loss came last month against the Tampa Bay Rays, when New York blew a 6-0 lead, then forced extra innings, only to fall 8-7 in 10 innings.
Whitlock has been hit or miss in his starts this season, allowing five runs twice, four once, and one twice. Given the opposition and the fact that Boston’s bats have managed more than three runs only once in six games, the 26-year-old righty will need to be more hit than miss tonight.
Boston Red Sox vs New York Yankees Prediction and Best Bets
Prediction for Red Sox vs Yankees: Yankees to win
Best Bet for Red Sox vs Yankees: Yankees -1.5
The Red Sox have really found the going tough recently, losing 12 of their last 17 games, nine of which have come by two or more runs. Of Boston’s 16 road losses this season, 12 have come by multiple runs, including each of the last five.
The Yankees may be missing their most feared hitter in Aaron Judge, but I still expect them to produce enough to back Cole and help him pick up his eighth win of the season.
