See Picks & Statistics For The GameAfter letting a win slip away from them on Thursday night, the Houston Astros didn’t let it happen again last night against the New York Yankees, making Justin Verlander’s gem count in a 3-1 win over the New York Yankees.
Verlander was the ace of the 2019 Astros team that was stunned by the Washington Nationals in the World Series. Also on that team was Gerrit Cole, who departed for the brighter lights and bigger city that offseason as he signed a mega-money deal with the Yankees.
This afternoon, Cole will face off with his former team as he looks to keep his unbeaten June going. Who will take the win in the third game of this four-game series between the American League’s best teams?

Will the Yankees Bring Out the Bats After Friday Failure?
Last night marked the tenth time this season that the Yankees lost while scoring one run or no runs.
Against Verlander and Houston’s bullpen, the home team managed just one run and five hits against Houston in last night’s game. After they scored four runs in the ninth to shock the Astros in walk-off fashion, there were no late-game heroics last night.
All of the runs came in the sixth inning, with Houston scoring three in the top of the sixth and New York scoring a single run in the bottom of the inning.
Results this season indicate that things should go better for the Yankees today. When they have been held to zero to two runs and lost, they are 9-3 in the next game. And in the two most recent instances, they put up ten runs against the Twins and nine runs against the Angels.
Javier has a 4.63 ERA in his six away appearances (four starts) this season, but that number is partly affected by his worst outing of the season, in which he allowed seven runs in 3.2 innings against the Nationals on May 14.
To date, the only other appearance in which he allowed three or more runs in an outing came earlier this month, when he allowed five runs in 3.2 innings against the Seattle Mariners at Minute Maid Park.
Houston Astros vs. New York Yankees Prediction and Best Bets
Astros vs. Yankees Prediction: Yankees to win
Astros vs. Yankees Best Bets: Yankees -1.5 (+130 at Bovada Sportsbook & MyBookie) & Astros team total under 3.5 runs (-110 at BetOnline)
In the nine instances in which the Yankees have bounced back from being shut down at the plate, seven of the wins have come by 2+ runs.
So, while the moneyline is in territory that takes it away from being a recommended bet, the -1.5 run line has a lot of value. Thursday’s loss was just the sixth one-run loss this season for the Astros and the first since a loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.
It doesn’t hurt that Cole has been excellent since getting shelled by the Twins earlier this month. In his two starts since, he has allowed one run, six hits, and four walks and struck out 19 in 13 innings in back-to-back starts against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Look for Cole to keep that good run going and to shut down his former team this afternoon in a win for the Yankees.
