Astros vs Phillies Predictions & MLB Picks Today (8/27)
The Phillies opened up this inter-league series with a 3-2 extra-innings win over the Astros less than 24 hours ago. Bryce Harper smacked a single in the bottom of the 10th inning to score Kyle Schwarber, giving Philadelphia the walk-off win while LHP Matt Strahm notched his sixth victory of the campaign.
With the win, the Phillies have now won three consecutive games while outscoring those foes 25-7 on aggregate. It’s been some much-needed momentum for Rob Thomson’s squad after playing to a 1-4 SU record across a five-game span last week.
Conversely, last night’s outcome also continued the Astros’ slump. Houston has now dropped five of its last seven outings, causing the club’s AL West lead to slowly disappear in the process. Additionally, the Astros are now just 4-10 SU in their last 14 trips to Citizens Bank Park, emphasizing just how difficult it is to defeat the Phillies in their backyard.
The Phillies have won 10 of their last 14 home games against the Astros. Will that trend continue?
But regardless of what the recent history looks like, fans are likely in for a pitching duel this evening.
Astros RHP Justin Verlander continues to be an effective pitcher at the age of 41. The three-time Cy Young winner has been more than comfortable playing on the road, going 2-0 with a 2.50 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 18 innings across his last four away appearances. He’s also 3-0 with a 1.42 ERA in three career matchups against the Phillies, having most recently defeated them two years ago.
On the flip side, Phillies RHP Aaron Nola owns a 2.16 ERA in his last four road appearances, meaning the Astros could struggle to score as well. Additionally, Nola has allowed only one earned run on 15 hits across his last 12 innings while holding opponents to a .377 on-base percentage.
Much like Verlander is against the Phillies, Nola is 3-0 through three all-time meetings with the Astros, which included striking out 25 batters with a 0.44 ERA in 20 2/3 innings.
Phillies RHP Aaron Nola has had a ton of success against the Astros throughout his career.
It should be a fairly even meeting, however, I predict a Phillies win tonight. Not only have they been the hotter team lately, but they also have the home-field advantage on their side. The Astros are struggling to win at Citizens Bank Park and I don’t see that changing given how well Nola has pitched in Philly lately.
As for the best bet, we’ll take the Under on the 8.5-run total. The Under is 5-1 in the Astros’ last six road games (6.7 runs per game) as well as 5-0 across the last five Houston-Philadelphia matchups (5.6 runs per game). Throw in the fact that Nola and Verlander are both pitching well at home and on the road, respectively, and it’s easy to understand why we might not see a ton of offense tonight.

Best Astros vs Phillies MLB Player Prop (8/27)
As well as he’s been pitching lately, I’m going with Aaron Nola u5.5 total strikeouts (-130) for the best Astros vs. Phillies player prop.
For starters, the Under is 4-1 in Nola’s last five starts as he’s recorded just 21 strikeouts across his last 28 2/3 innings. At the same time, the Astros are only averaging 7.3 strikeouts in their last seven outings and only struck out eight times on Monday. Considering how Nola has only been last five or six innings in his recent performances, it isn’t as if he has a ton of time to rack up some Ks.
Even though I’m still expecting a Phillies victory, I won’t be surprised if Nola finishes without a massive strikeout total.
