See Picks & Statistics For The GameIn just his 11th MLB start, Los Angeles Angels pitcher Reid Detmers tossed a no-hitter this past Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays. Tonight, the rookie lefty returns to the mound as the Halos look to even their road series against the Texas Rangers.
Against one of the best teams in the American League, Detmers was perfect through the first five innings, and the Rays’ only baserunners reached via a walk in the sixth and an error in the seventh.
Tonight, he returns to the scene of his worst start of this season, looking to make up for that outing and pick up his third win of the season. The Rangers will be in no mood for favors, however, as they aim to pick up their third straight win and secure a series victory over their AL West rivals.

Road Trends Favor Rebound Result for Halos
In last night’s series opener, most of the fireworks took place in the first inning. The Angels jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but the Rangers responded with six runs and knocked Angels starter Noah Syndergaard out of the game after only two-thirds of an inning.
From there, only two more runs were added, with the Rangers going on to pick up a 7-4 win.
It was a similar result to the opener when the two teams met for four games in Arlington last month. The visitors went on top with two first-inning runs, but the Rangers scored four in the second, four in the fourth, and two in the fifth to take control in a 10-5 win.
If the rest of this series pans out like that one did, the Angels will be just fine. After losing that opener, they won the final three games, outscoring the Rangers 24-11 in the process.
Detmers started that second game, and he exited after allowing five runs and six hits in 3.1 innings. The Halos trailed 6-2 after four innings, but a fifth-run fifth inning got Detmers off of the hook and helped carry them to a 9-6 win.
Detmers also exited his other road start early, as he allowed three runs and four hits in 4.2 innings in Boston on May 4. But the Angels rallied in that game as well, forcing extras with a run in the ninth and scoring six in the 10th in a 10-5 win.
Both of those wins were part of an impressive early trend for the Angels, who have one of the league’s best road records thus far.
Win-Loss & Over/Under Trends for the Angels in 2022
- The Angels are 5-1 following a road loss.
- They are 10-3 overall following a loss.
- The Angels are 19-10 overall as a favorite and 9-4 as a road favorite, as they are for tonight’s game.
- The over is 8-4-1 in their games following a loss.
When they faced Hearn in that first series, the Halos tallied three runs and six hits off of him in 3.2 innings in a 7-2 win on April 16. But after an up and down April, Hearn is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA in two starts, allowing just two runs and five hits in 10 innings in picking up home wins over the Atlanta Braves and Kansas City Royals.
However, the Rangers have yet to win the first two games of any of their home series this season and haven’t done so since August 2021 against the Colorado Rockies. And they are just 6-7 after a win and 5-7 as a home underdog, which offers quite the contrast to the Angels’ success after a loss and as a road favorite.
Los Angeles Angels vs. Texas Rangers May 17 Prediction and Best Bets
Angels vs. Rangers Prediction: Angels to win
Angels vs. Rangers Best Bets: Angels ML (-130 at BetOnline and Bovada Sportsbook) & OVER 8.5 (-115 at BetOnline, Bovada Sportsbook, and BetUS)
Detmers is unlikely to toss a second straight no-hitter or come anywhere close to one, but the visitors are good value for the win tonight. So is the over, given that all five head-to-head matchups this season at Globe Life Field have gone over 8.5 runs.
