Since 1999, no #1 national seed has won the College World Series. That trend is one game away from continuing through this season, with #3 Texas A&M and #1 Tennessee set to face off in Game 2 of the CWS championship series this afternoon (2:00 pm ET, ABC).
In Game 1 yesterday, the Aggies (53-13) jumped on the Volunteers (58-13) early and made a big early lead stand up in a 9-5 victory.
Both teams hit two home runs, but the inning that blew the game open did not feature a long ball. In the top of the third, A&M scored five runs using four singles, an error, and a walk. When the dust cleared, they were up 7-1, adding to the advantage they held from the moment freshman sensation Gavin Grahovac belted the third pitch of the game out to right for a solo home run, his 23rd big blast of the season.
After falling behind 9-2 in the top of the seventh, Tennessee did try to make things interesting in the bottom of the seventh with a three-run frame. But that would be their last runs of the game, and they are now staring at falling short of their championship goal once again.
The Aggies, meanwhile, are 27 outs away beating the Vols to becoming a first-time champion, and with the way they have played in Omaha thus far, a sweep wouldn’t be a surprising outcome even with Tennessee heavily favored to send the finals to a decisive Game 3.

Tennessee vs Texas A&M Betting Analysis
With their season on the line, the Vols will have Drew Beam (9-2, 4.30 ERA) on the bump this afternoon. Beam has made 18 starts this season, and in 98.1 innings, he has allowed 100 hits and 25 walks and struck out 92.
Beam has had his ups and downs this season, but in his most recent outing, he performed well against North Carolina last Sunday, allowing one run, four hits, and two walks and striking out seven in five innings.
That effort helped propel the Vols to a 6-1 win over the Tar Heels and a 2-0 start in Omaha. If he can produce another such performance, Tennessee’s hopes of a first national title could be extended for one more day.
However, since Tennessee started SEC play, Beam has not been able to put together consecutive starts in which he allowed fewer than three runs. The Vols have been able to counter that with their bats for the most part, but if he’s generous today like he was against Evansville in the super regionals (4.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, BB, 5 K), it could spell the end of Tennessee’s season.
Given how good the Vols have been to this point in 2024, there’s a lot of reason to feel confident that they will force a Monday matchup for all the marbles.
Also, the CWS finals going the maximum three games has become the norm in recent years. In seven of the previous nine editions of the CWS, the title series went three games, with 2017 (Florida over LSU) and 2022 (Ole Miss over Oklahoma) being the exceptions.
However, from a value standpoint, the Aggies are the sensible pick. Sure, the Vols are the #1 team in the country, and their bats make them a threat to break out at any point.
But there is no way that A&M should be this big of an underdog, especially with a 1-0 lead in the bag, a run of solid pitching performances in Omaha, and an invaluable edge in bullpen quality. They may well not seal the deal today, but I won’t feel bad about backing a +200 underdog in this spot even if they don’t come through.
