2024 College World Series Odds and Favorites: Buckle Up for an ACC-SEC Battle in Omaha

Two weeks ago, 64 college baseball teams began their quest for a national championship. Eight of those teams have survived and advanced to reach the 2024 College World Series, and it will be an ACC-SEC tussle for the trophy.

Upsets are a frequent feature of the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament, and this year has been no different. But it has also been a better year for chalk than most years.

The top four national seeds (#1 Tennessee, #2 Kentucky, #3 Texas A&M, and #4 North Carolina) are a part of the Omaha eight. So is #8 Florida State, #10 NC State, and #12 Virginia.

The only team in the 2024 CWS field that was not one of the top 16 seeds is anything but an underdog, even if they have a record of 34-28, finished 13-17 in their conference, and were a #3 seed in their regional.

That would be the Florida Gators, last year’s national runner-up. This year, they stumbled and bumbled their way through the regular season but managed to land a spot in the field of 64. They have the second longest championship odds, with only NC State having longer odds. But armed with the best player in the field in two-way stud Jac Caglianone, the Gators aren’t to be counted out.

The Gators will get the opportunity to show why on Saturday evening when they open against the favorite to win it all. That would be Texas A&M, who edges out the top-seeded Vols at the top of BetOnline’s CWS winner odds despite suffering a significant injury blow in the super regionals.

Who Are the Favorites to Win the 2024 College World Series?

Texas A&M (+265)

Can the Aggies win their first College World Series title without their best hitter? In the first inning of their Super Regional showdown with Oregon, star slugger Braden Montgomery suffered a season-ending lower leg injury while sliding into home.

Montgomery, who transferred from Stanford last summer, hit .322 with 27 home runs and 85 RBI this season and will likely be a top-10 pick in the upcoming MLB Draft.

Without Montgomery, the Aggies were able to dispatch the Ducks in three games to reach Omaha for the second time in three seasons. And oddsmakers are bullish on their chances to capture a championship even without him, to the point that they are out ahead of top-ranked Tennessee by a slight margin.

Montgomery may be sidelined, but A&M still has a couple of beasts at the top of the lineup in freshman sensation Gavin Grahovac (.306, 22 HR, 63 RBI) and Jace Laviolette (.314, 28 HR, 77 RBI).

While the Aggies can do some serious damage at the plate, their arms are the biggest reason why they may thrive in Omaha, where runs are often at a premium.

If they get a lead, they can turn to the likes of Evan Aschenbeck (6-1, 1.66 ERA, 0.80 WHIP in 28 appearances), Chris Cortez (22 appearances, 9-3, 2.83 ERA), Brad Rudis (23 appearances, 6-0, 2.23 ERA), and Shane Sdao (20 appearances, 5-1, 2.96 ERA) to shut things down.

If there is one caveat about Texas A&M, it’s that they strike out a ton at the plate. For the season, they have struck out 562 times, an average of 9.1 times per game.

Tennessee (+275)

Over the last four seasons, Tennessee has had a wealth of success, but the Vols have yet to reach the mountaintop for the first time in program history.

Will this finally be their year? They found themselves up against the wall after being stunned in Game 2 of their Super Regional matchup with surprise package Evansville, but they responded by bashing seven home runs in a 12-1 win in Game 3.

Chicks dig the long ball, and so do the Vols, to the tune of 173 home runs this season. Leadoff hitter Christian Moore (.375, 32 HR, 71 RBI) leads a mash unit that has five players with 18 or homers and 12 with five or more.

How far will that prodigious power carry them in a ballpark where a lot of well-hit balls end up being loud outs? It didn’t lead them to glory in their 2021 or 2023 College World Series trips, so they may need to aim to turn some of those home run swings into double swings if they are to prosper.

Pitching can be an afterthought with the Vols due to their exploits at the plate, but they bring a lot of mound talent to the table. If that talent can perform in Omaha, they won’t need to rely on the offense as much.

Kentucky (+575)

In this year’s College World Series bracket, seven of the eight teams have been to Omaha before, and all seven have appeared at least once in the previous five editions of the CWS.

That leaves Kentucky as the lone first-timer in the field. Can the Wildcats come away with a championship in their first appearance?

Statistically, a lot of numbers don’t jump off the page as with Texas A&M, Tennessee, or some others in the field.

The Wildcats do have some power, led by their two Ryans, Waldschmidt (.346, 14 HR, 46 RBI) and Nicholson (.299, 21 HR, 61 RBI). But they have stolen 117 bases, led by Waldschmidt’s 24 (in 31 attempts) and Emilien Pitre’s 25 (in 34 attempts).

That speed can be priceless at Charles Schwab Field, where manufacturing runs could make all the difference in an early exit and a trip to the championship series.

Also, while the Wildcats have a 5.02 team ERA, don’t let that dissuade you from betting on them. After allowing eight runs in their regional opener against Western Michigan, Kentucky allowed just three runs across their final two regional games and their two Super Regional games against highly touted MLB Draft prospect Travis Bazzana and Oregon State.
