Blue Bombers vs Alouettes Prediction & Best Bet: Grey Cup 2023
This is the first time in CFL history that the Blue Bombers and Alouettes are meeting in the Grey Cup. Having said that, Canadian football’s biggest game isn’t anything new for the odds-on favorites.
No team has made more Grey Cup appearances (27) than the Blue Bombers. This is the fourth consecutive season that Winnipeg is playing in the annual spectacle, having won back-to-back outings before losing 24-23 to the Argonauts in 2022.
But even if they weren’t successful last year, it’s clear that the Blue Bombers have the experience advantage in this matchup. The Alouettes, meanwhile, haven’t competed for a championship since they won back-to-back Grey Cups in 2009 and 2010.
Additionally, the Blue Bombers have had the Alouettes’ number over the last two years, winning three of four matchups during that span. That includes Winnipeg winning both of the 2023 regular-season meetings by a combined score of 64-20.
However, a lot has changed since these teams last met in August. For instance, the Alouettes head into the Grey Cup on a seven-game winning streak, winning those games by a plus-16 average scoring margin. That streak features three upset victories — including when Montreal was a +10 underdog in the Eastern Final.
It’s also worth noting that the Alouettes’ late-season turnaround led to their owning the second-best scoring defense, only trailing the Blue Bombers. In fact, Montreal has held its last seven opponents to an average of 14.1 points.
But even with the Alouettes’ impressive play as of late, I can’t forget that the Blue Bombers are the CFL’s best team for a reason. Between the previous Grey Cup experience and loaded roster on both sides of the ball, Winnipeg will capture its third title since 2019.
Nevertheless, I do expect the game to be closer than the odds imply, hence why I’m taking Montreal on the spread. The Alouettes have shocked their doubters lately, leading to a 6-1 ATS record over the last seven games.
Considering how the Blue Bombers are 2-5 ATS in their last seven outings outside of Winnipeg, I won’t be surprised if the underdogs make the favorites sweat a bit.
Blue Bombers vs Alouettes Prediction: WPG wins
Bet: MTL +8 (-105 on Bovada)
Blue Bombers vs Alouettes Best Player Prop: CFL Grey Cup 2023
The 2023 CFL Grey Cup is littered with promising player props, but I’m going with the Over on Brady Oliveira’s 87.5-yard rushing total as the best option.
After rushing for a career-high 1,540 yards during the regular season, the 2023 Most Outstanding Canadian just torched the Lions for 109 ground yards in the Western Final. As a result, Oliveira has hit the Over on this prop seven times this season with two of those instances coming against Montreal.
With a high of 46 degrees being projected for Hamilton on Sunday, the Blue Bombers could look to run the ball more often, boding well for Oliveira to smash the Over once again.
Bet: Brady Oliveira o87.5 Rushing Yards (-115 on Bovada)
