After almost three exciting weeks of action, Eurobasket 2022 will come to a conclusion today in Berlin with Spain and France vying for the title at Mercedes-Benz Arena.
The two finalists occupy spots in the top four of FIBA’s world rankings, with the U.S. first, followed by Spain, Australia, and France.
Both teams are also no strangers to recent success at Eurobasket. Spain claimed titles in 2009, 2011 (with a win over France), and 2015, while France took the crown in 2013.
Also, this will be the 11th straight edition of Eurobasket that at least one of the two teams has won a medal, with at least one making the final eight times in that span.
But with Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, and Luka Doncic all taking part in this year’s tournament, these two teams were not expected to be the last two teams standing.
But here we are, with the two highly decorated sides set to battle it out for the big prize in Berlin. Who will be celebrating tonight?

When these two teams met in the Eurobasket 2011 final in Kaunas, Lithuania, they lit up the scoreboard in a 98-85 Spain win. But over the last three decades, such results have not been the norm.
Of the 13 previous Eurobasket finals, starting with the 1993 final (Germany’s 71-70 win over Russia in Munich), only four have gone over 158.5 points (1995, 2003, 2011, and 2017).
Both finalists have done plenty of scoring in the Eurobasket 2022 knockout stages, but both would be content to keep things in the 70s.
Whatever the sport, finals can often be cagey, tense games, with defense winning out over offense. So, the under is the much stronger play here.
With that out of the way, there are compelling arguments to back either side for the win. But who is the pick to take the title?
This Spain team may not have the talent level of their previous Eurobasket winners, but with coach Sergio Scariolo–who was at the helm for the three Eurobasket titles and a FIBA World Cup win in 2019–leading the way, they can’t be counted out in any situation.
France’s domination of Poland and the resilience they showed in overtime wins over Turkey and Italy are impressive. And Spain should have their hands full with Rudy Gobert, who produced big games against Turkey (20 points, 17 rebounds) and Italy (19 points, 14 rebounds).
But ultimately, Spain’s prodigious pedigree and what they have showed in key moments in their last four wins make me lean their way in what should be a close contest.
