The Utilita Arena in Newcastle plays host to Night 16 of the 2022 Premier League Darts campaign, and the programme throws up some mouth-watering matches with players battling for position at both ends of the ladder.
Jonny Clayton enters on top of the league as the man to beat, but he has company behind in the form of Michael van Gerwen with James Wade in third.
This is the last night before the play-offs, which will take place on June 13 at Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin. Clayton and MVG have clinched the #1 and #2 spots for the play-offs, and Wade has also punched a ticket to Berlin.
Tonight, the fourth and final spot will be decided between Joe Cullen and reigning PDC World Champion Peter “Snakebite” Wright, who will meet in the quarterfinals.

Odds are via BetOnline.
Jonny Clayton vs. Gary Anderson
- Jonny Clayton -330
- Gary Anderson +250
Flying Scotsman Gary Anderson is a former Premier League champion, but he has looked out of sorts since the start of this season. He can be found stuck to the bottom of the table with nothing to play for, as there is now no way he can make the playoffs.
The campaign has been a bitter disappointment for Anderson and his army of followers, and it’ll now be interesting to see if he cuts his losses or aims to go out on a high. After this match, we will get a clearer picture of the Scotsman’s intentions.
Opponent Jonny Clayton has already qualified and will be playing in the knockout stages of the Premier League. Will he do that in his current position as league leader, or will he drop his guard and keep his energy for the next round?
This will be tight with nothing to play for, and we’re backing Anderson on the handicap.
Jonny Clayton vs. Gary Anderson Betting Tip – Anderson +2.5 legs (-110)
Joe Cullen vs. Peter Wright
- Joe Cullen +112
- Peter Wright -136
There may be nothing to play for in the above contest, but there’s plenty on the line here as Joe Cullen, and Peter Wright prepare to slug it out for a playoff place. Both men were expected to be mixing it in the knockout stages, but it looks like we could lose one of these players at the end of the night and the regular season.
Cullen starts in fourth with two nights won and 22 points on the board. That puts him one place ahead of his opponent in fifth, with Snakebite also carrying 22 points into this contest.
The winner of this match will secure fourth spot and join the best players in the next round when things start to get serious. Cullen saved his season by winning the night at the O2 in London last time, and the timing of that victory ensures we stick with him here at nice odds.
Joe Cullen vs. Peter Wright Betting Tip – Cullen to win (+110)
Michael van Gerwen vs. Michael Smith
- MVG -225
- Michael Smith +182
MVG is the betting favourite to sign off the regular season with a victory. Still, he has already qualified for the next round, and it’ll be fascinating to see how much effort he puts into this game. Is he happy to go through, or is he still gunning for the top spot in the Premier League?
Smith won’t be playing in the next round, and his adventure is almost over, with this being his last involvement in the competition this season. He is the only player in the tournament without a win, and we don’t think he’ll finally get off the mark here.
Mighty Mike may not give his all here as he has made it through to the finals, and there’s not much to be gaining by going all out to win the league. He will win this match, though and should do it in style against a poor opponent. Back MVG in your multiples.
Michael van Gerwen vs. Michael Smith Betting Tip – MVG to win (-225)
James Wade vs. Gerwyn Price
- James Wade +118
- Gerwyn Price -144
James Wade is third in the table and has already qualified for the next round. In contrast, opponent Gerwyn Price has been eliminated and will play no further part in this competition after his final darts on Thursday.
The betting is strange as it has Price as the hot favourite to grab a win and lift himself clear of the bottom three. That suggests the traders expect Wade to down tools and start saving his best work for next week.
That’s a fair assumption to make with the likes of Michael van Gerwen and Jonny Clayton but taking his foot off the gas just isn’t James Wade’s style. He is a confidence player and knows he must be in the shape of his career ahead of the semi-finals and bid to win the Premier League darts.
Take the end of the season out of the equation for a minute and look at this match as a simple, one-off game. Wade is much the better player; his form is far more impressive, and he has a reason to end on a high. Back him at great odds as a single or add the Machine to your midweek parlays.
James Wade vs. Gerwyn Price Betting Tip – Wade to win (+118)
