Summer at “the spa” is back. Saratoga returns on Thursday with the Wilton Stakes and the featured Grade 3 Schuylerville.
What Makes Saratoga Special
Saratoga is a special place for many race fans. There are a number of reasons for this. Every fan can find something to like at Saratoga.
Quality Racing
For those who want to see the best horses, the meet features races like the Travers, The Alabama, the Jim Dandy and more. All of the stakes featuring the most established runners in the country. There is not a day of racing at Saratoga without a stakes race of some sort.
Future Stars
If the future of the game is more your speed, this time of year is typical for next year’s Derby and Oaks hopefuls to begin their campaign. The young stars of this meet will be framed in terms of not how they run here, but where they will run later.
Days Gone By
The final and perhaps biggest reason for racing fans love of Saratoga is the novelty. The track has seen some of the all time great jockeys, horses, and trainers. Beyond that though there is a quaintness to a town that comes alive for just a couple months in the summer.
Horse racing has always been a sport with great accessibility to the stars, but in Saratoga it is just different. The horses cross the road to get onto the track. It is not uncommon to be out at dinner sitting a table away from Todd Pletcher or getting coffee behind D. Wayne Lukas.
The fans, the horses, and the connections are almost inseparable from one another. It is this feel of connectivity that brings many people back year after year.
Racing at Saratoga
Chad Brown
The big story coming into Saratoga the last several years is to Chad or not to Chad. The reference is to Eclipse winning trainer Chad Brown. It is no secret that his horses are pointed toward the competitive and prestigious Saratoga turf racing.
While he is a high percentage trainer on both dirt and turf he makes his money on the lawn. It is the class of his grass horses that have already earned him 4 separate training titles at the track affectionately called “the spa”.
Players will often have to decide which of his many entries they prefer and at what price as his runners are often pounded into the ground by the betting public.
Jockeys
The jockey colony at Saratoga may be the deepest of any colony anywhere in the United States. Last year’s winner Luis Saez will have to fend off old rivals Irad Ortiz, Jose Ortiz, and Joel Rosario.
Complicating things will be the addition of Flavien Prat who has quickly become the go to rider for some of Chad Brown’s top turfers. Add to the mix the year round NYRA jockeys like Manny Franco and Dylan Davis who both had head turning Belmont meets and you have a recipe for a jockey crown that will be fun to watch all summer.
