Saratoga Sunday: Malathaat, Clairiere Shuvee Showdown

Sunday’s card at Saratoga has an early feature. The Shuvee Stakes will go off as race 5 and will see a heavyweight showdown of older mares on the dirt.

Saratoga- Race 1

Post: 1:05 PM ET; $105k Maiden Special Weight going 6 furlongs on dirt; Entries: 8

• #7 WASABI BOY (6-1) gets the top selection. He has the perfect run style for this type of race and may just get the perfect trip here. This one has the pedigree to be a major player in this spot.
• #6 NO CONFESSION (30-1) should be competitive in this spot. This one has run against some good ones. Maybe he can take a big step forward here.
• #2 BAT FLIP (7-2) could be in with a shot in this race. He has to be respected going out for the combination of Pletcher and Ortiz. This one scratched out of a different spot earlier in the weekend which could be a signal this one is better suited here.
• #1 FAITHFUL AND TRUE (5-2) feels like a fringe contender in this spot. He goes out for the Brisset barn and gets Prat in the irons.

• #1 ICON (7-2) gets the top selection. He comes into the race in really good form. This one could get the right setup in this race.
• #2 AMPERSAND (6-5) appears to be a major player in this race. He is a good bet to hit the board in this type of race. This one has the perfect run style for this type of race and may just get the perfect trip here.
• #7 AMEDEUS MUSIC (12-1) feels like a fringe contender in this spot. He seems to fit well enough here.
• #4 ONCE A GIANT (5-2) is probably best to put underneath on most tickets. He has been really solid in recent starts and should be ready to run a big one here. This one shouldn't have trouble with the 1 mile distance.

• #2 POWER AGENDA (9-5) gets the top selection. He has the perfect run style for this type of race and may just get the perfect trip here. This one looks to be the class of the field.
• #3 TACO BEAN (3-1) isn't without hope. He seems to fit well enough here. This one may get a really nice run of the race in this spot.
• #1 STORM SHOOTER (5-2) isn't without hope. His run style fits this race type extremely well.
• #4 DOCTOR LOVE (4-1) isn't without hope. The 6 furlongs seems to be his preferred distance.

• #1 KING ANGELO (5-2) gets the top selection. He should be in the right spot to be in with a chance late. This one may get the absolute dream flow of the race in this spot.
• #6 PHANTOM SMOKE (2-1) appears to be a major player in this race. He seems to fit well enough here. This one comes into the race in really good form.
• #8 SHIRAZ (8-1) appears to be a major player in this race. He classes up with these types. This one should be in the right spot to be in with a chance late.
• #2 SWASHBUCKLE (9-2) should be competitive in this spot. This one seems to like these really short sprint races.

Post: 3:21 PM ET; $200k Shuvee Stakes going 1 1/8 miles on dirt; Entries: 4

• #4 CLAIRIERE (1-1) gets the top selection. She shouldn't have trouble with the 1 1/8 mile distance. This one has to be respected going out for the combination of Asmussen and Rosario. She has been so strong in recent outings.
• #3 MALATHAAT (4-5) appears to be a major player in this race. She has proven to be able to handle these conditions in previous starts. She is classy, but sometimes lacks the killer instinct to put competition away which can make things a bit tight at the wire.
• #1 EXOTIC WEST (12-1) isn't without hope. She seems to fit well enough here. This one has proven to be able to handle these conditions in previous starts. She feels like a strong candidate to upset if the top two duke it out.
• #2 CRAZY BEAUTIFUL (8-1) is the fourth choice here. This one looked like a rising star, but has badly levelled out and failed to take the next step in her career. She’s a talented horse, but seems a bit light to be in this field.

• #3 WATCH THIS MUNNY (12-1) gets the top selection. At a price she may trip out in this race. This one has proven to be able to handle these conditions in previous starts.
• #2 KEY OF LIFE (2-1) appears to be a major player in this race. She shouldn't have any trouble with the 6 furlong distance. This one has races good enough to beat this group.
• #7 RARIFY (3-1) could be in with a shot in this race. She has to be respected going out for the combination of Ward and Ortiz.
• #4 KALING (7-2) is well respected on the morning line. I don’t see it on paper but the NYRA morning line is by far the most accurate in the country.

• #3 LOVE TANK (8-1) gets the top selection. She could get the right setup in this race.
• #5 IDEA GENERATION (2-1) gets the top selection. She goes out for the Brown barn and gets Ortiz in the irons. I worry about the price at post time being too short.
• #7 BORN DAPPER (4-1) gets the top selection. She has races good enough to beat this group. This one has the perfect run style for this type of race and may just get the perfect trip here.
• #1 CORNINGSTONE (8-1) feels like a fringe contender in this spot. She has races that fit within this group. I look for her to outrun the price here.
