Pimlico Preakness Stakes: Triple Crown Bid Continues

Two weeks after the Derby, Mage returns for the 2nd leg of the Triple Crown at Pimlico. He is the only horse that will compete in both the Derby and the Preakness.

Pimlico Race Course- Race 1

Post: 10:30 AM ET; $60k Allowance going 5 furlongs on turf; Entries: 10

• #3 ROCK THE BOAT (5-2) gets the top selection. He runs evenly and looks to get a very fair pace scenario here.
• #1 TAUBER (3-1) is another that clearly has talent and should get a fair set up in this spot.
• #9 BOURBON AND ICE (8-1) has races good enough to beat this group. This one will be rolling late and has a good closing kick that could get the job done here.
• #10 AMERICAN SPEED (7-2) has to be respected going out for the combination of Cox and Saez. This one shouldn't have trouble with the 5 furlong distance.

Post: 11:05 AM ET; $64k Allowance Optional Claiming going 1 1/16 miles on dirt; Entries: 9

• #3 BE BETTER (5-2) is the top pick. He shouldn't have trouble with the 1 1/16 mile distance. This one goes out for the Russell barn and gets Toledo in the irons.
• #5 IYWAAN (2-1) has really consistent pace figures which should work well in a moderately paced race. This one has the top overall power rating in the group.
• #6 TORCH OF TRUTH (4-1) will likely have a lot to do in the lane, but could get up with a competitive run. This one goes out for the Trombetta barn and gets Carrasco in the irons.
• #4 ONE TEN (10-1) is a price horse that could make for some interesting exotics even if the top spots get a bit predictable.

• #10 HE'S GOT SWAGGER (7-2) looks best here. He has races good enough to beat this group. This one should be sitting in the second tier of runners and looking to make one well timed run at the leaders.
• #5 TOOFAREASTISWEST (4-1) should improve off the first start and goes out for the Trombetta barn and gets Carrasco in the irons.
• #1 COMPOSER'S DREAM (6-1) is trained by Mike Maker. These runners are always dangerous going long on the turf, especially when the price is right.
• #4 WEYHILL ROAD (5-1) fits this group on speed figures and should perform in kind.

• #4 ARABIAN LION (2-5) gets the top selection. He has the top overall power rating in the group. This one has races good enough to beat this group.
• #3 TAPIT'S CONQUEST (4-1) has recent form to stack up against runners of this caliber.
• #6 DENINGTON (5-1) makes sense on speed figures. This one has solid early pace figures in a race that looks to lack a ton of front running speed.
• #5 FEELING WOOZY (12-1) has been really solid in recent starts and should be ready to run a big one here. The recent company lines are a positive in this spot.

• #5 DOWNTOWN KATIE (4-1) is the top pick. She looks to be the class of the field and the draw is really nice for this spot.
• #6 TEQUILERA (7-2) could be a dangerous threat to get loose on the front end.
• #15 YOUENS (10-1) seems to fit well enough here. This one has been really solid in recent starts and should be ready to run a big one here.
• #16 PENTAGON (12-1) goes out for the Mcgaughey barn and gets Ortiz in the irons. This one will need some help to draw in and will have to navigate a wide trip.

• #1 HAVNAMELTDOWN (8-5) looks best here. He may benefit from a hot pace up front. This one comes into the race in really good form.
• #5 SUPER CHOW (3-1) will likely be in the first flight of runners and should be in with a chance late. This one has proven to be able to handle these conditions in previous starts.
• #7 PRINCE OF JERICHO (9-2) makes sense on speed figures.
• #2 RYVIT (7-2) has been really solid in recent starts and should be ready to run a big one here. This one could get the right setup in this race.

• #1 WHITEBEAM (3-1) gets the top selection. She has the top overall power rating in the group. This one has to be respected going out for the combination of Brown and Ortiz.
• #5 VERGARA (7-2) comes into the race in really good form. This one will likely be in the first flight of runners and should be in with a chance late.
• #6 BIPARTISANSHIP (8-1) looks to be the class of the field.
• #4 EMINENT VICTOR (4-1) comes into the race in good form and has the distinction of being the “Other Chad Brown” which can be a lethal angle on these big days.

• #7 EMMANUEL (7-2) is the top pick. He has solid early pace figures in a race that looks to lack a ton of front running speed. This one makes sense on speed figures.
• #1 ATONE (9-5) appears to be a major player in this race. This one has tactical speed and can sit just off the leaders for a stalk and pounce trip.
• #4 HURRICANE DREAM (7-2) shouldn't have trouble with the 1 1/8 mile distance. This one will likely have a lot to do in the lane, but could get up with a competitive run.
• #2 SPEAKING SCOUT (6-1) has been really solid in recent starts and should be ready to run a big one here. This one should be sitting in the second tier of runners and looking to make one well timed run at the leaders.

• #10 COPPOLA (6-1) has races good enough to beat this group. This one has tactical speed and can sit just off the leaders for a stalk and pounce trip.
• #13 BEER CAN MAN (8-1) has the top overall power rating in the group and has been running against really good competition recently.

• #7 NAKATOMI (5-2) is the top pick. He looks to be the class of the field. This one should be sitting in the second tier of runners and looking to make one well timed run at the leaders.
• #8 STRAIGHT NO CHASER (3-1) has really consistent pace figures which should work well in a moderately paced race.
• #4 AL LOVES JOSIE (10-1) is a price horse and could be in with a shot in this race. He seems to fit well enough here.
• #10 WONDRWHERECRAIGIS (4-1) will likely be out on or near the lead and will look to hold off the charge to the wire.

• #1 FUNTASTIC AGAIN (3-1) has to be respected going out for the combination of Ward and Velazquez. This one has been really solid in recent starts and should be ready to run a big one here.
• #8 WONDERFUL JUSTICE (5-1) goes out for Brad Cox who will give the leg up to Luis Saez, who for my money is arguably the top jock in the country.
• #5 CIRCLING THE DRAIN (8-1) has been really solid in recent starts and should be ready to run a big one here. This one will be rolling late and has a good closing kick that could get the job done here.

Pimlico Race Course- Race 13

Post: 7:01 PM ET; $1500k Preakness S. going 1 3/16 miles on dirt; Entries: 8

• #1 NATIONAL TREASURE (4-1) gets the top selection over the Derby winner. He was at one point a top contender in this division before his Derby dreams were dashed. The key here is the tactical speed on the more speed friendly Pimlico surface.
• #3 MAGE (8-5) has the top overall power rating in the group, but there is concern about how much of his patented late run will come through at Pimlico in a race that doesn’t appear to have the same quick fractions we saw in the Derby. My heart’s with Mage because life’s more fun with a Triple Crown on the line.
• #7 BLAZING SEVENS (6-1) should relish the distance and would be a surprise to be totally out of the mix.
• #5 RED ROUTE ONE (10-1) is the kind of horse that could be looking to make a midsummer step forward. Maybe this a chance to get him on the improve.

• #2 AA TAKE A CHANCE (12-1) could be a dangerous threat to get loose on the front end.
