The day before the Kentucky Derby the fillies compete in the Oaks. When the triple crown trail moves to Pimlico the Black-Eyed Susan sees the return of the fillies ahead of the Preakness.

• #5 SHADOW SPHINX (5-2) comes into the race in really good form. This one shouldn't have any trouble with the 1 1/16 mile distance.
• #14 ENCOURAGE (12-1) makes sense on speed figures but the post is a bit of a concern.

• #5 LAW PROFESSOR (5-2) looks best here. He could get the right setup in this race. This one looks to be the class of the field.
• #2 RATTLE N ROLL (9-5) appears to be a major player in this race. He will be rolling late and has a good closing kick that could get the job done here. This one is coming off a very impressive effort in the Ben Ali.
• #8 KEYSTONE FIELD (10-1) is a price horse and could be in with a shot in this race. He may benefit from a hot pace up front. This one comes into the race in really good form.
• #3 CLAPTON (6-1) feels like more of C type for those in favor of the ABC handicapping approach. It wouldn’t be a total shock, but this one definitely has a “best of the rest” feel.

Kentucky Oaks winner Pretty Mischievous will not run in the Black-Eyed Susan.

• #9 FAIZA (7-5) gets the top selection. She has the speed figures to get the job done and until someone crosses the line in front of her, she’s the one to beat. Hard not to think this one remains undefeated.
• #3 HOOSIER PHILLY (10-1) has the figures to be a player here. She was the talk of the town early in her career with connections even pondering a run in the Derby. She clearly has brilliance, but where has it been lately. I’ll give her another shot before signing the divorce papers for good.
• #6 MIRACLE (10-1) runs evenly and looks to get a very fair pace scenario here. This one has been really solid in recent starts and should be ready to run a big one here. She just seems a cut below the best of this bunch.
• #8 BALPOOL (8-1) is worth a look. She goes out for the Atras barn and gets Franco in the irons.

• #6 CERTAIN (9-2) should be competitive in this spot. He makes sense on speed figures. This one has proven to be able to handle these conditions in previous starts.
• #2 COVERT KAT (4-1) should be sitting in the second tier of runners and looking to make one well timed run at the leaders. This one looks to be the class of the field.
