My Gulfstream Park picks today start with a juvenile turf puzzle and build toward two late races where I have much firmer opinions.

Friday's nine-race card mixes maidens, claiming races, turf routes and a veteran dirt sprint, with first post scheduled for 12:20 p.m. ET. The selections are preliminary because scratches and official race-day conditions are still outstanding, so any surface switch will require a fresh look. Once conditions are known and if they differ from Fast/Firm, head over to our track bias tool to see if some bias exists for these conditions. These picks assume Fast/Firm.

What makes the card interesting is the contrast between lightly raced horses with upside and exposed runners whose finishing habits are already clear.

Race 1: A debutant can upset the obvious turf horses

My Pick: #2 Gunn On the Run (Morning line: 12-1)

I am taking the uncertainty rather than the exposed form in this two-year-old turf mile. Gunn On the Run has no race to lean on, but his Gunnevera–First Dude family gives him a plausible foundation for a route, and Carlos David has given him a long, uninterrupted series of works rather than rushing him to the races. He should not need the lead in a field where It's On My Honor and Etruscan Warrior can keep the first half honest. The obvious risk is professionalism: a first starter going two turns can lose the race before the serious running begins.

My alternative: #1 It's On My Honor (Morning line: 8-1) has tactical speed and two useful dirt sprints behind him. He still has to prove the turf and the mile, but he owns the safest route to a clean first-flight trip among the experienced runners.

Race 2: Frida gets the right stalking target

My Pick: #3 Frida (Morning line: 9-5)

Frida is the runner I trust most in this six-and-a-half-furlong claiming race because she combines current dirt form with enough speed to sit just behind the first exchange. With Kindness can force the issue, while Role Play should also hold a useful position, so Frida does not need to make the pace herself. Her recent figures are the strongest sustained set in the field, and this is not an ambitious class placement. The concern is that she can be made to work if the leaders refuse to come back, but her overall profile is the most complete.

My alternative: #4 Role Play (Morning line: 3-1) has nearly the same tactical advantage and has already shown that she belongs at this general level. I prefer Frida's finish, yet Role Play is the one most likely to make her earn it through the final furlong.

Race 3: Higher Self is the card's most intriguing price horse

My Pick: #5 Higher Self (Morning line: 20-1)

Higher Self is the preliminary opinion that jumps off the page. She is lightly raced, drops into a modest maiden claimer, and has more room to improve than the exposed runners surrounding her. Her early record includes a step-slow start that still needs video clarification, so I am not treating the trouble as a proven excuse, but this is exactly the kind of field in which a cleaner break could matter. She should be able to settle behind Senta Says rather than chasing blindly, and that gives her a chance to finish instead of merely passing tired horses. Before acting on the Gulfstream Park odds, I would compare the available racing price at BetOnline and wait for the replay review.

My alternative: #2 Senta Says (Morning line: 9-5) is the reliable alternative because she brings the best blend of speed and recent competitive form. She is more exposed than Higher Self, but she can control the race if no one presses her through the turn.

Race 4: I'm Chill has the clearest upside in a crowded maiden race

My Pick: #5 I'm Chill (Morning line: 5-2)

This mile maiden claimer is more competitive than the morning line suggests. I'm Chill has only two starts, has already shown enough pace to stay in contact, and should get a better chance to distribute her energy over a mile than the shorter races allowed. Kiona and Just Majestic have stronger finishing records, but both have had more chances to reveal what they are. I want I'm Chill close enough to pounce before those grinders build momentum, though her limited route experience keeps this from being a comfortable single opinion.

My alternative: #3 Papas Cookie (Morning line: 7-2) is another lightly raced filly with a realistic forward trip. She may not have as much late punch as Kiona, but she can get first run and make the closers pass her.

Race 5: Tell Me Some Lies can turn class into control

My Pick: #4 Tell Me Some Lies (Morning line: 5-2)

Tell Me Some Lies is my clearest turf-route preference. She has the best recent ability in this group, owns the late pace to finish a mile, and does not need a perfect lone lead to run her race. Claimed and Eileen's a Warrior can keep the tempo legitimate, which should let my pick settle in the second flight and make one sustained run rather than fighting the rider. The only reason for restraint is price and the possibility that her best efforts have already made her the obvious public choice. The evidence still makes her the horse the others have to beat.

My alternative: #2 Eileen's a Warrior (Morning line: 9-2) has the speed to secure position before the first turn and enough established turf form to stay involved. Her task is to relax early; if she spends too much energy keeping Claimed honest, Tell Me Some Lies should finish past her.

Race 6: Veronika Z owns the best route profile

My Pick: #3 Veronika Z (Morning line: 7-5)

Veronika Z has the combination I want in a low-level Tapeta route: proven synthetic ability, tactical speed and enough late strength to finish after making a move. Giddy Up Baby can keep her honest, but Veronika Z is less dependent on a specific pace and can win from just off the lead. She is not invulnerable at a short price because a crowded first turn or an early commitment could bring the others closer. Still, her established route form gives her an important edge over rivals trying to recover old races or stretch uncertain sprint form.

My alternative: #1 Giddy Up Baby (Morning line: 4-1) is the logical danger and may actually land the cleaner trip from the rail. She has settled for minor awards too often to match Veronika Z as a win proposition, but that same consistency makes her difficult to leave out of the finish.

Race 7: Rogue Runner can stalk instead of duel

My Pick: #5 Rogue Runner (Morning line: 3-1)

Rogue Runner has the best current form in this three-year-old turf group and should not have to sacrifice it in a pace fight. Sunfish and Scarlett's Law can help establish position, while Rogue Runner can sit close without being committed to the rail or the lead. She has already handled stronger efforts than several rivals have produced, and her tactical flexibility is the main separator in a race where the leading contenders are otherwise close. Bert's Knoty Girl brings a stronger late punch, so Rogue Runner cannot wait too long to make her move.

My alternative: #4 Bert's Knoty Girl (Morning line: 5-2) is the finisher I want if the first half becomes more demanding than expected. She has enough class to win this and may be the better closer, but she gives Rogue Runner the positional advantage.

Race 8: Mish is the veteran anchor

My Pick: #7 Mish (Morning line: 7-5)

Mish is my strongest opinion on the card, although that is not the same as a confirmed bet. His recent dirt sprint form is simply stronger than this starter-optional field, and he has the speed to stay outside the congestion while King Cab and Carambaso sort out the inside positions. At nine, he carries normal veteran uncertainty, but he has continued to win rather than merely preserve old figures. If he breaks cleanly, his stalking speed should put him in command before the final furlong. I will still check the live BetOnline board because a strong opinion can become an easy pass at the wrong price.

My alternative: #2 Proud American (Morning line: 3-1) arrives in excellent form and can sit the same kind of pressing trip. His challenge is the jump from good recent company into a confrontation with a horse whose top dirt races remain better.

Race 9: Kinkonce has the pedigree to be ready first time out

My Pick: #5 Kinkonce (Morning line: 20-1)

The finale is another maiden turf mile where the first starters matter. Kinkonce is by Daredevil out of a Speightstown mare, and the pedigree gives him enough speed and athleticism to be taken seriously around two turns rather than dismissed as a pure sprint type. His worktab has to translate into race-day composure, and the outside pressure from experienced horses could expose him if he breaks slowly. Still, the established runners have not set an unreachable standard, which makes his broad upside more attractive than their familiar limitations.

My alternative: #4 Yastrzemski (Morning line: 6-1) has an equally credible debut case through City of Light and Ghostzapper. I give Kinkonce a narrow preference, but this is a genuine two-debutant race and neither should be treated as dependable before the gate opens.

My Bottom Line: Mish anchors a card built around selective upside

Mish is the most dependable horse on my sheet, while Tell Me Some Lies has the cleanest turf-route advantage. Higher Self and Kinkonce are the two less obvious runners I most want to reassess after video, scratches and surface confirmation. The final decision belongs to the live odds board, and you should review the current racing menu at BetOnline after the card is updated with official changes to see what bets hold value.

Simon Dupuis grew up in Montreal with harness racing in his blood. Saturday nights with his father at “Blue Bonnets” watching the standardbreds go, long before he ever placed a bet of his own. Though he loved the sport and the time with his dad, what really fascinated him were the numbers behind it. While other kids were memorizing driver names, Simon was already trying to figure out why the morning line never quite matched the real odds or the eventual winner. That love of numbers followed him to college where he studied statistics, in part because he wanted to bring real rigor to handicapping. After a few years in the banking sector, Simon made the jump and turned that statistical training into a full-time profession, building models that treat every card as a probability problem that can turn into cold hard cash.
