Canterbury Park Beats the Heat, Low Takeout Wager Wednesday

The racing world has been riddled with heat related cancellations. Although Shakopee, MN was near 100 degrees on Tuesday, there will be a quick return to seasonable temperatures on Wednesday. This makes Canterbury Park one of only a few options to bet.
The unseasonably warm weather has already led Horseshoe Indianapolis and Churchill Downs to cancel their Wednesday cards.
Money Back in Player’s Pockets
Canterbury Park continues to its player-friendly bets. The Post Time Pick 4 requires a player to pick the winners of the first four thoroughbred races on the card. The pick 5 requires a player to select the winner of the last 5 thoroughbred races.
It is important to remember that Canterbury Park runs a mixed meet meaning that they do usually include some quarter horse races at the end of the night. These races are not included in the picks sequences.
10% Takeout
There is nothing inherently special about having an early pick 4 and a late pick 5 on the wagering menu. However, Canterbury Park has had great success with lowering the takeout on these key wagers.
The takeout, known as the vig or juice in sports betting, is the cut of the pool the track takes before cashing out tickets. Horse racing has notorious bad takeout sometimes scooping as much as 30% before paying the players.
However, Canterbury has dropped that number on their two spotlight wagers to just 10% making them the lowest in the country. This means 1 thing. More money is going back into the pockets of the winning players.
Betting News recapped the economic impact early in this experiment back in 2021.
