Next week, the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and Xander Schauffele will tee it up at the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. Ahead of the second major of the season, the PGA Tour’s best and brightest—sans Scheffler—will take on Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina in the Wells Fargo Championship.
Scheffler, the Masters champion and world number one, has won two of the first five signature events this season. In March, he won the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, and after winning at Augusta, he won the RBC Heritage in South Carolina the following week.
However, with he and wife Meredith expecting to welcome their first child at any time, he has opted to skip the Wells Fargo Championship.

Will he take part next week at Valhalla? That remains to be seen, but his absence this week alters the outlook for the tournament. With four wins and a runner-up finish in his last five starts, Scheffler would have been a huge favorite this week.
Instead, McIlroy, who has won the Wells Fargo Championship a record three times, is in that role, with Schauffele and defending champion Wyndham Clark next in line.

Who Are the Favorites to Win the Wells Fargo Championship?
Rory McIlroy (+750)
McIlroy’s first PGA Tour win came at this tournament and course in 2010, and he has since added wins in 2015 and 2021 to become the only three-time winner of the event.
McIlroy has only one top-5 or top-10 finish this year in solo stroke play events, a third-place finish at the Valero Texas Open last month. But he and Shane Lowry recently teamed up to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, and a return to a setting where he has had a lot of success could be the point his season really takes off.
Xander Schauffele (+1100)
Schauffele is still searching for his first win since the 2022 Scottish Open, but he has been one of this season’s top performers to date. In ten events, he has four top fives and seven top tens.
Schauffele finished second behind Clark at last year’s Wells Fargo Championship, and it feels like only a matter of time before the reigning Olympic gold medalist is back in the winner’s circle.
Wyndham Clark (+1600)
Clark missed the cut at Augusta, but he has been a standout performer in other big events this season. Along with a win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, he finished second at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, tied for second at the Players Championship, and tied for third at the RBC Heritage.
Those four results account for his lone top fives or top tens this season, as it has been a feast or famine start. If he hasn’t finished near the top of the leaderboard, he has finished outside of the top 25. Which will it be this week?
Patrick Cantlay (+2200)
Like Schauffele, Cantlay is still searching for his first win since 2022 (that year’s BMW Championship). He is also searching for his best golf, as he has finished in the top ten only twice.
However, those two top tens were in signature events, as he finished tied for fourth at the Genesis Invitational and tied for third at the RBC Heritage.
Also, his other best finishes this year were in signature events, as he finished tied for 12th at The Sentry and tied for 11th at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. So, this week may be as good as any to back Cantlay to do well.
Max Homa (+2200)
Homa is the only other golfer besides McIlroy to win the Wells Fargo Championship multiple times, winning it in 2019 and 2022 (when it was held at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm in Maryland due to Quail Hollow hosting the President’s Cup).
Like Cantlay, Homa has only two top-ten finishes thus far this season. And like Cantlay, those finishes were on the big stage, as he finished tied for eighth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and tied for third at the Masters. So, he might bring his best, or close to his best, this week.
