With Scottie Scheffler winning the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play over the weekend, golf fans are turning their attention to the next event on the 2022 PGA TOUR schedule: the Valero Texas Open.
The annual tournament will take place on TPC San Antonio’s Oaks Course in San Antonio, Texas from Thursday, March 31 to Sunday, April 3. This year’s purse is set at $8.6 million, with the winner taking home $1.54 million.
Jordan Spieth won the 2021 Valero Texas Open when he shot 18-under-par, defeating second-place Charley Hoffman by two strokes. Needless to say, all eyes will be on Spieth to see if he can make lightning strike twice.

Best Bets for the 2022 Valero Texas Open
Jordan Spieth (+1100)
As mentioned earlier, Jordan Spieth is the reigning Valero Texas Open champion and it’s hard not to like his odds of repeating, especially with him sitting at +1100.
The truth is that the 28-year-old has been solid in his most recent visits to TPC San Antonio. Including his 2021 victory, Spieth has finished inside of the Valero Texas Open’s top 10 in three of his last four outings. It may not be as good as winning the whole event, but he did place second in 2015, with a 10th-place performance in 2014 also being respectable.
Spieth’s 2022 season has been a bit of a mixed bag. Although he’s seen three top-25 finishes so far, he’s finished 26th or worse in each of his last four events. Nevertheless, past success on a course usually does help, which is why you can’t count out the most recent champion.
Hideki Matsuyama (+1700)
A lingering back injury has kept Hideki Matsuyama out of PGA action for the last three weeks. Fortunately, he’s set to make his return in San Antonio as a warmup before he defends his title at next week’s Master’s Tournament.
The good news is that this year’s Valero Texas Open field is fairly weak, making Matsuyama at +1700 odds to win the event too tempting to ignore.
The 30-year-old doesn’t have the biggest resumé at the Oaks Course, having competed at TPC San Antonio just once in his career. His lone appearance occurred last year, when he finished 30th.
Nevertheless, it’s Matsuyama’s performances this season that should be enough to convince bettors to side with him. He has five top-20 finishes in his last seven events, with four of them being 13th-place performances or better.
Matsuyama is also one of a handful of golfers to have won multiple tournaments on the 2022 PGA TOUR. He won the ZOZO Championship back in October before taking home the Sony Open in Hawaii in mid-January. Needless to say, Matsuyama is a threat to win any tournament he enters.
Gary Woodland (+2900)
Gary Woodland may not be a former champion like other competitors in the field, but bettors can get some good value out of him at +2900 odds to win the Valero Texas Open.
Woodland has seen his fair share of ups and downs this season. While he’s been cut in six of the 11 events he’s competed in, he’s already seen four top-25 finishes — including three inside of the top 10.
Woodland has also been steadily building up momentum in his most recent outings, which include a pair of fifth-place finishes at the Honda Classic and Arnold Palmer Invitational. Considering how recent those instances occurred, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him coming close to winning it all in San Antonio of the week.
The 37-year-old veteran has only competed at the Valero Texas Open four times in his career, however, he’s improved with each showing. He placed sixth at the 2021 tournament and, assuming his trend of improvement continues, Woodland could be in the mix until the very end this week.
Charley Hoffman (+4600)
If bettors are looking for more value than what the above golfers offer, look no further than Charley Hoffman at +4600 odds.
Hoffman’s name has become fairly synonymous with the Valero Texas Open in recent years. While he was the runner-up last year, that wasn’t the first time he placed second. In fact, he’s done it an additional two times: once in 2011 and another in 2019.
Having said that, Hoffman’s highlight at TPC San Antonio came in 2016 when he won the entire tournament, defeating Patrick Reed by a single stroke for the honor.
Hoffman’s 2022 tour hasn’t been that remarkable, with him only seeing one top-25 tournament. However, he’s proven before that you can’t count him out and his history at the Valero Texas Open leaves him as a potential dark horse this week.
