When the 124th U.S. Open tees off this morning in Pinehurst, North Carolina, everyone will begin on the same score. But for all intents and purposes, the field will be in pursuit of the undisputed best golfer in the world and tournament favorite, Scottie Scheffler.
In both team and individual sports, rankings don’t always paint an accurate picture of who the best is. In this case, however, the number beside Scheffler’s name belongs there and should for some time, even if he doesn’t conquer the field and the course this week.
Last weekend, Scheffler won the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio, picking up his fifth winner’s check of 2024. All five wins have come in his last eight tournaments, and all five are among the most renowned events on the PGA Tour.
First up, he broke a yearlong winless drought with a five-stroke win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
The next week, he shot a final-round 64 to become the first golfer to win The Players Championship in back-to-back years.
The following month, he earned his second green jacket with a four-stroke win at the Masters. That was followed the next week by a victory at the RBC Heritage.
Then, after two awful results at the PGA Championship (a tie for eighth) and the Charles Schwab Challenge (a tie for second), Scheffler celebrated his first win since becoming a father with his one-stroke triumph at Muirfield Village.
Since Tiger Woods’ dominance of the PGA Tour ended in the middle of a November night in 2009, there have been several contenders and pretenders to Tiger’s throne.
But none of them have occupied the air that Scheffler currently does and stands to for the foreseeable future.
2024 Results for Scottie Scheffler
- The Sentry: tied for 5th
- The American Express: tied for 17th
- AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am: tied for 6th
- WM Phoenix Open: tied for 3rd
- The Genesis Invitational: tied for 10th

Since Woods won six times in 2009, no one has won more than five times in a full season (Jason Day and Jordan Spieth in 2015 and Justin Thomas in 2017). Scheffler will change that with a win this week or at any other point this season. Two more wins will make him the first to reach seven wins in a season since Woods won seven times in 2007.
And with 91 weeks at number one—56 of them consecutively as of this week—Scheffler has already spent the sixth most weeks in the top spot, with fifth (Nick Faldo, 97) likely to be bumped out of his spot this summer.
When he tees it up at Pinehurst #2 today, Scheffler will be a part of a star-studded trio that features world number two and PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele and four-time major winner Rory McIlroy, who rounds out the top three in the current world rankings and the top three U.S. Open favorites.
The famed course, which previously hosted the U.S. Open in 1999, 2005, and 2014, could pose a challenge for the field, including Scheffler. But U.S. Open odds nonetheless favor a strong start and a strong week for Scheffler, who has the shortest odds to win the U.S. Open since Woods—an eventual runner-up—in 2007.
