Each of the three previous times that the PGA Championship was held at Valhalla Golf Club, dramatics took place in the final round.
With 15 golfers within five shots of the lead entering the final round, including six within two shots, the last 18–or perhaps more–holes of the 2024 PGA Championship could follow or even upstage the thrills that occurred in 1996, 2000, and 2014.
The final twosome to tee off will be Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa, who sit atop the 54-hole leaderboard at 15-under.
All alone in third is Sahith Theegala (14-under), with Bryson DeChambeau, Viktor Hovland, and Shane Lowry tied for fourth at 13-under.
Within three shots of the lead are Robert MacIntyre and Justin Rose (-12), with Dean Burmester (-11) in sole possession of ninth. And with the potential for low scores, the six golfers who are tied for tenth can’t be counted out. That group includes Louisville native and two-time PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas, who is one of five major winners in the top 15.
2024 PGA Championship Leaderboard (Through 54 Holes)
- T1. Xander Schauffele -15
- T1. Collin Morikawa -15
- 3. Sahith Theegala -14
- T4. Bryson DeChambeau -13
- T4. Viktor Hovland -13
- T4. Shane Lowry -13
- T7. Robert MacIntyre -12
- T7. Justin Rose -12
- 9. Dean Burmester -11
- T10. Thomas Detry -10
- T10. Austin Eckroat -10
- T10. Harris English -10
- T10. Tony Finau -10
- T10. Lee Hodges -10
- T10. Justin Thomas -10
That group of major winners also includes Lowry, who hurtled himself into the fray with a nine-under 62 and came agonizingly close to a 61.
Missing from the list of top contenders is Masters champion and world number one Scottie Scheffler, who has had quite the week.
After spending part of his Friday morning in a jail cell, Scheffler shot a second-round 66 to enter the weekend three shots off of the PGA Championship lead.
However, he fell off of the pave and likely out of contention with a chaotic third round that featured four birdies, five bogeys, and a double bogey on his second hole. His two-over 73 was his first over-par round of the season and ended a run of 42 consecutive rounds of par or better.
But even with the best golfer in the game not in the mix, we are set for a sensational Sunday in Louisville. Will it end in a long-awaited major breakthrough for Schauffele?

Predictions & Picks for the Final Round of the 2024 PGA Championship
In my pre-tournament predictions and picks, Schauffele was my choice to claim the Wanamaker Trophy. With where he is entering the final round, there is no reason to alter that view.
He did relinquish top spot due to a double bogey on the 15th hole, a surprising stumble after carding only one bogey in his first 50 holes. But thanks to birdies on 17 and 18, he is a 54-hole leader for the second straight week.
While he couldn’t close it out at the Wells Fargo Championship, that near-miss could provide major motivation to do so today. If he does, he will finally add “major champion” alongside “Olympic gold medalist” and win his first tournament since the 2022 Scottish Open.
With such a crowded field of contenders trying to deal with the pressure of winning a major title, a lot of movement may occur today.
That could open the door for one of the former major champions to utilize their experience and make a run either at the win or a high finish. That makes Thomas a rather appealing option to slide into the top five (at +450 odds to do so) and to card a third straight round of 68 or better (at -110 to do so).
Who else bears watching? Scheffler may not contend for the win, but don’t expect him to mail it in today. He is +105 to shoot 67 or better, and he is +350 to record an eagle or better. If you are looking beyond winner or finishing position picks, both of those stick out as excellent options.
